  1. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces P.FM.05.31 Describe what happens when two forces act on an object in the same or opposing directions. Rachel Estrada & Christina Connelly October 31,2011

  2. List of Materials Tug of war rope Yarn Wooden blocks Student science journals

  3. Engage • To engage the students we will involve the students in a quick game of tug of war. • Students will be hypothesizing and then observing what happens when: • Each side has an equal number of people. • Each side has a different number of people.

  4. Explore Groups of 2-3 students will be given a wooden block with string connected to two ends. First, students will pull on the left string and observe which direction the block moves, then repeat the process for the right string. Next, students will pull equally on each string while observing what happens to the block. To record these observations students will be asked to draw pictures in their science journals. They should include arrows which indicate the direction of the pull and the direction the blocks moved.

  5. Explain We will ask students what their observations were during the explore activity. Hopefully, students will use key terms such as push or pull. We will then explain to them that these are both forces. We will then define force, balanced, unbalanced, and acceleration relating these terms to both the engage and explore activities.

  6. Elaborate Students will be given a three column worksheet along with a series of pictures showing forces acting in the same and opposing directions. Students will then cut out the pictures and paste them in the appropriate column.

  7. Evaluate • We will evaluate students by: • Asking questions. • Listening to discussions. • Looking at their elaborate worksheets.

  8. Lesson Overview • GLCE: P.FM.05.31 Describe what happens when two forces act on an object in the same or opposing directions. • Lesson goals and objectives: • After completion of the lesson, Students will be able to… • Distinguish between balanced and unbalanced forces.; • Define force, balanced forces, unbalanced forces, and acceleration • Compare and contrast examples of two forces acting on an object in the same or opposing directions. • Five E’s • Engage: tug of war • Explore: wood blocks activity • Explain: class discussion, defining of terms • Elaborate: three column worksheet • Evaluate: questioning, observing, checking worksheet
