  2. Examples: Adding Fractions 1. Since both fractions have the same denominator, just add the numerators and simplify the answer.

  3. Examples: Adding Fractions These fractions don’t have a common denominator. Look at the denominators. Since 2 goes into 6, change the top fraction so it has a denominator of 6. Add the numerators and simplify. 2. 3 X 3 X 3 1

  4. Examples: Adding Fractions 3. 7 We find a common denominator, 8, and change the second fraction. When we add we end up with an improper fraction. Divide to make it a mixed number. X 2 X 2 6

  5. Examples: Subtracting Fractions 4. The denominators are the same so we just subtract the numerators and simplify.

  6. Examples: Subtracting Fractions 5. The denominators are different so you must find a common denominator. Use 24 because both 6 and 8 go into 24. Change the fractions and subtract. 20 x4 x4 9 x3 x3
