Relative clauses (Unit 3) Non-defining relative clause Defining relative clause Gives essential information about the noun or noun phrase it modifies The purpose of a defining relative clause is to clearly define who or what we are talking about The mouse (which/that) the elephant loved was very beautiful. Who or which can be replaced by that Relative pronouns can be left out when they are the object of the relative clause • Provides interesting ADDITIONAL information • Elephants, which are large and grey, can sometimes be found in zoos. • Cannot use that • Relative pronoun cannot be omitted
