Session Objectives • After class today, students will be able to: • Describe how instructional objectives are useful in course design and student prep • Find an electronic version of the web page for Spring 2013’s CSCE 1040, sections 1 and 2 • Log on to theCSE computers • Hit a life-sized picture of Phil Sweany with a dart from 8 feet away while standing on one foot and imbibing a beverage of choice

  3. New and Different • Voluntary recitation sections in NTDP F222 and/or F218 • Monday 10:00-noon (except 1/21) • Tuesday 11:30am – 1:30pm (except 1/15) • Tuesday 2:00 – 4:00pm (except 1/15) • Wednesday 2:00 – 4:00pm • Wednesday 6:30 – 8:30pm • Thursday 11:00am – 1:00pm • Friday 8:00 – 10:00am

  4. Instructional Objectives • “An intent communicated by a statement describing a proposed change in the learner” (Mager 1962) • Describes how learner demonstrates that objective reached • Describes important conditions • Indicates how to evaluate performance

  5. Objectives Answer • Where am I going? • How shall I get there? • How will I know I’ve arrived . . . • (What will be on the exam?)

  6. Why ? • Leads teacher, student towards goal(s) • Allows prioritizing topics • Leads to well-structured course (???) • Makes preparing exams easy • Study aid for students

  7. Examples(The student will be able to:) • Solve quadratic equations • Given a list of 35 chemical elements, recall and write the valences of at least 30 • Demonstrate an appreciation of music • Know the rules of football • Given a list of algebraic equations with one unknown, solve for the unknown without aid of references, tables, or calculating devices

  8. Quiz 1 • What programming language(s) are you comfortable using to write programs? • Have you used Unix/Linux systems? • Have you used command-line operating system(s)? • Have you taken CSCE 1030 at UNT at least as recently as Fall 2010?

  9. Quiz 2 • Please PRINT you name as legibly as you can on an otherwise blank sheet of paper. (I’ll use this to determine who has shown up to class “at least once.”)
