  17. What we are testing to determine a genetic risk? • We are looking at “SNP” (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) or “Genetic marker”. Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  18. Genetics is who we are • Most of your physical traits, such as eye color, hair color, and height, are inherited. So, too, are risks for health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. • In fact, all diseases or medical conditions have a genetic component (except trauma). Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  19. What are we made of? Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  20. How important is DNA? • Your DNA affects every aspect of your health by helping to shape your risks for many different health conditions. • DNA is 99.9% identical among humans. • All our variations of shape, size and color are within that remaining 0.1% (DNA variants). Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  21. Human DNA Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  22. Genetic (DNA) Variants • Each of us is different because we carry a unique combination of genetic variants. • These DNA variants have been analyzed and found that some of these DNA variants affect our risk of developing diseases, such as cancer, heart attack and diabetes. Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  23. DNA Variants = SNPs • A SNP, pronounced “snip”, is a single variation in the nucleotide sequence of DNA and stands for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism that can affect our inherited risk and a multitude of other characteristics. Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  24. DNA Variants (SNPs) Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  25. DNA Variants (SNPs) Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  26. Genetic Marker (SNP) • When a DNA variant is shown to be correlated with such a characteristic, this SNP can be referred to as a genetic marker for that disorder. Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  27. Personalized Genetic Test • Your genetic profile can indicate your potential genetic risk • It is in your genetic makeup that you can discover your predisposition for various conditions and diseases. • Once you are aware of those conditions, taking preventive measures is the next logical step. Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  28. Goals of Genetic Markers Analysis • Predictive • Preventive • Personalized Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  29. How do we collect DNA sample? Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  30. What happened to my DNA? • Labs will extract DNA from the cells found within saliva. • Analysis of DNA for SNPs. • The sample will be destroyed no more than 60 days after results are finalized. • DNA extract will be destroyed no more than one year from the most recently ordered report sample receipt date. • Request at any time that DNA be destroyed after testing Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  31. Results • Available in 4-6 weeks Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  32. Genetic counseling is required before and after testings Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  33. What can you do if you have genetic risks? • Supplements • Lifestyle change Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  34. How do you know if I do the right thing? • Telomere test to measure telomere length Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.

  35. How to prevent and follow the change results? • Genetic counseling for detail to prevent the disorders screened to be at risk • Follow the result by “Telomere test” Valairat Dhamcharee, M.D.
