Lab Exercise # 11 Zoo- 145 The Arterial System • The blood vessels responsible for taking the blood from the heart to different organ of the body are called as Arteries. • The arteries are generally thick walled tubes and carries almost pure or oxygenated blood except the pulmonary artery that takes impure or deoxygenated blood to the lungs. • Arteries are located much deeper in the muscles and appear whitish red due to the colour of the arterial muscles or reddish due to pure blood in the arteries. • The largest artery that carries the blood from the heart is Systemic Aorta. After emerging from the ventricle of the heart it makes a curve to the left side and then descends downward to form Dorsal Aorta. • Then different branches go out to different organs and the distribution is accomplished.

Lab Exercise # 11 Zoo- 145 The various branches emerging from the Aortas, Systemic and Dorsal are as follows: Systemic Aorta: Innominate Artery: It is very small in length or absent Common Carotid Artery: Subclavian Artery: Supply blood to the brain and all sides of the face. Anterior Facial Artery: Supply blood to the brain Posterior Facial Artery: Supply blood to the face Vertebral Artery: Supply blood to the Vertebral Column Brachial Artery : Supply blood to the fore-arm. Internal Mammary Artery: Supply blood to the muscles in the chest

External Iliac Artery: • Internal Iliac Artery: • Femoral Artery: (Blood supply to the leg) • Vesicle Artery: (Blood supply to the urinary bladder) • Pulmonary Artery or Aorta or Arch: • (Blood carried to lungs for oxygenation)
