  1. Alexandria university Faculty of engineering Mechanical department Spot on Water Hammer Presented to: prof. Hassan warda By Ahmed Hassan Ali Dogheim NO:26 SEC:1 Ahmed Mahmoud Mohammed Issa NO:88 SEC:2

  2. What is Water Hammer? Whenever water flow is started or stopped faster than the system can respond acoustically, a Water Hammer event will occur. Flow in pipe vacuum valve

  3. Water hammer in pipe

  4. Most common reasons for surge.. 1-Sudden closure of valve (house) 2-Pump shutdown (filling oil tanks) 3-change in slope in piping system

  5. A-avoiding column separation. • 1-suitable closing time • 2-Choose suitable pipe dim And velocity • 3- Adding a pressure regulator • 4- water hammer free valve

  6. 1- Calculate the suitable closing time for the valve to avoid reaching vapor pressure Start of closure Pmax &Vmax Start of closure Pmin &Vmax End of closure Pmin &Vmin End of closure Pmax &Vmin Using Bernoulli's equation for unsteady flow: (H2-H1)+(Z2-Z1)+(FLV /2gd) = - (L/g) (dV/dT) 2

  7. 2-Choose suitable pipe dim And velocity • (2-3)m/s • 3-Adding a pressure regulator helps reducing the pressure at some cases

  8. 4-Chossing a water hammer free valve (solenoid valve)

  9. B-Absorb effect of Water hammer • By filling the vacuum caused by surge with fluid. • 1-Surge Suppressor • 2-Air valve (vacuum breaker) • 3-Water Hammer arrestor

  10. 1-Surge Suppressor

  11. 2-Air valve (vacuum breaker)

  12. Examples for air valve :-

  13. 3-Water Hammer arrestor

  14. Results of ignoring water hammer. • 1- vibrations

  15. 2-high raise in pressure (failure)

  16. THANK YOU
