Activating Windows Azure Storage Activating Windows Azure storage, an AZDPS engagement, is designed to help customers that have purchased a Windows Azure storage solution with StorSimple, CommVault or STEALTH but have not activated Windows Azure. The engagement will help them connect their ISV solution to Windows Azure and start realizing the value of their investment. Engagement Structure Customize the engagement to meet your customer’s unique requirements Engagement Activities Understand the customer’s business objectives and assess the storage environment for Windows Azure readiness Create a Storage Utilization Plan to prepare the customer to migrate workloads to Windows Azure Connect the customer’s storage solution (StorSimple, CommVault or STEALTH) to Windows Azure Run production pilots to demonstrate the value or storage with Windows Azure If your knowledge of your customer environment allows you to move more quickly through the engagement and complete further steps than those suggested in the engagement, feel free to skip ahead. The program will honor the engagement as long as the final required deliverable reflects and justifies the tasks completed.

  9. Windows Azure Readiness Assessment Overview Review the completed pre-engagement questionnaire or work with the customer to complete it. Catalog all of the applications in the environment:Inventory and report on web application portfolios and SQL Server database instances. Windows Azure Readiness Assessment & Capacity Assessment: • Estimate the needed capacity to run applications on the Windows Azure Platform • Evaluate applications based on migration difficulty • Stack rank applications in terms of migration suitability • Obtain a TCO-ROI analysis for the application Determine best workloads for Production Pilot Optional MAP Toolkit. To help in assessing the environment, consider running the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit for Windows Azure Platform which automates the assessment process.

About Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit for Windows Azure Platform MAP's inventory assessment feature the discovery and detailed inventory reporting of web applications, IIS Server, SQL Servers and databases. MAP analyzes the performance characteristics of the inventoried web applications and databases, and helps in prioritizing the applications for migration to the Windows Azure platform. Utilizing this information MAP provides an estimate on the resources required such as the number of Windows Azure compute instances, number of SQL Windows Azure databases, bandwidth usage, and storage. The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit for Windows Azure Platform includes a 3-step process: • Inventorying and assessing the customer environment • Capturing performance metrics of the web applications and databases • Reviewing and customizing workloads for Windows Azure features capacity estimates • In addition to the analysis, MAP provides comprehensive reports that include: • Web Application and Database DiscoveryDetails on the inventoried web applications and SQL Server database instances to help plan for the migration of on-premises workloads to the Windows Azure Platform • Windows Azure Platform Capacity AssessmentWindows Azure compute instances and database storage requirements for deploying workloads on the Windows Azure Platform

Storage Utilization Plan Outline Based on your customer’s storage objectives and the Windows Azure Readiness Assessment results, create a plan to help your customer activate Windows Azure storage and get the most out of their storage investment.
