  1. Down’s Syndrome By Shane Johns

  2. Down' Syndrome is where a person receives and extra 21st chromosome from either their father or their mother during the early stages of life. It is caused during reproduction and sometimes the meiosis of sex cells.

  3. Symptoms • People with down syndrome often are afflicted with the following external symptoms, slow cognition, almond shape to the eyes, white spots in the eyes, shorter limbs, poor muscle tone, protruding tongue, shorter than average neck, and slightly larger and rounder head.

  4. Internal Symptoms • Also there are a few internal symptoms that could happen, such as, congenital heart defects, gastrophaegal reflux disease and dysfunctions with many other systems of the body. • The main death cause of people with down syndrome is neuronic degeneration.

  5. Degeneration During Development • Because these people have an extra 21st chromosome, these genetic defects occur while developing in the womb. This is why down's syndrome also causes stillbirth and death after recent birth.

  6. Discovery • Down's syndrome was discovered by Dr. John Langdon Down in 1866. It was then discovered that the problem was an extra 21st chromosome given to the child from a parent by Jerome Lejeune in 1959

  7. Discovery Continued • Since then we have discovered many things about this disease. such as the fact that mothers who are older (meaning above 45) have a 1 in 19 chance of having a baby with down's syndrome. Also the average life span of persons with down's syndrome is 49 years.

  8. Cell Process • The cell process that causes Down’s Syndrome is the meiosis of sex cells. • When a sex cell splits, one of the chromosome 21’s go to the wrong cell and give it one extra chromosome causing the defect.

  9. Process problems • When the extra 21st chromosome is in the cell. It is replicated the exact same way therefore every cell replicated will have an extra chromosome 21.
