  3. Qualifications MS in Elementary Education *Highly Qualified *7 1/2 years experience teaching 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades-Fairhope Elementary *AMSTI Trained *Digital Renaissance Leadership Academy 2014 *Grade Level Co-Chair 2015 *Math Team Teacher 2016, 2017

  4. Morning Arrival 7:15-7:40 Drop off in car line. Students will be supervised as they sit in the hall until 7:40. We will unpack and begin our morning routine after the first bell.

  5. Daily Binder Student will bring home daily. Weekly newsletter-new each Monday Please put money/note in the clear pouch. A note will be sent home is there is a discipline issue. Homework and papers to be completed at home should be in the “Return to School” side of folder. Check folder nightly and remove papers on the “Left at Home” side.

  6. Always Send Money in an Envelope • Child’s Name • Amount of Money • What it is for • Teacher’s Name • PIN Number (if lunch $)

  7. Discipline To help children achieve their potential and become independent thinkers. To provide a fun and supportive classroom environment. To help your child make new friends and discover new interests.

  8. Classroom Management Students will always be encouraged to exhibit appropriate behavior. Students will receive positive reinforcements (verbal praise, hugs, class cheers, stickers) for cooperative and positive actions. However, when problems do arise, I will use a clip chart as a cue to stay on task: Ready to Learn; Way to Go; Excellent Effort; Super Student: Conduct Grade=G Think about It: Lose 5 minutes of recess - Conduct Grade=S Make Better Choices: Lose 10 minutes of recess – Conduct Grade=N Parent Contact: Grade=U *Children will only be asked to clip down after they have been given the opportunity to make a better choice after a verbal warning. Students have the opportunity to clip back up when they have made a change in the behavior.

  9. Subjects The subjects we cover during second grade include:ReadingSpellingLanguageMathScienceSocial StudiesTechnologyPEMusic and Art

  10. Reading Reading and Word Study Reading Text – We will use the Scott-Foresman Series as well as many wonderful trade books. Skills include: vocabulary, fluency, comprehension activities, discussions, independent reading, and phonics. Children will be involved with literature on their instructional reading levels. Please encourage your child to read for 15 minutes every night.

  11. Accelerated Reading Program • The AR program offers students an opportunity to read stories from texts based on their individual reading levels which will be determined by the STAR Reading Evaluation. STAR evaluations are given 3 times per year. • AR points are earned by passing a comprehension test after the book is read. • Prizes will be awarded within the classroom. • Check Arbookfind.com to find quiz numbers.

  12. Star Testing STAR Tests are given three times per year. STAR tests vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. This evaluation gives me additional data about your child’s reading progress.

  13. Spelling Spelling tests will be given on Friday. Spelling words can be found on the weekly newsletter. Each week’s homework will be the same: Speller’s Choice which is due on Friday.

  14. Language We will learn: parts of speech punctuation proper sentences paragraph development creative writing

  15. Math Speed drills will be given daily for fluency practice. Pleasepractice basic math facts at home! Grades will come from skill assessments. Math homework will be assigned as needed. It can be found in the front pocket. Please remember to review your child’s homework.

  16. Science and Social Studies Many Science and Social Studies topics will be correlated with our reading stories or will be related to the season. We have 2 major Social Studies events in second grade: Our Veterans’ Day program (November 10th ) and Wax History Museum (February 23rd).

  17. Handwriting Handwriting practice will be included in daily work and graded on weekly spelling tests. Cursive letters will be taught. Work will be graded by letter formation, spacing and neatness.

  18. Guidance Mrs. Wolchina is our guidance counselor and will meet with students.

  19. Music and Art Music is every other Monday with Mrs. Edwards. Art is with Mrs. Humphrey every other Monday.

  20. P.E. • PE is with Coach Hudson 35 minutes daily. Please make sure your child wears comfortable shoes each day.

  22. Homework Each night your child should complete the following assignments: 1.  Spelling - Complete a Speller’s Choice activity. (Turn in all 4 on Friday.) 2.  Math – Practice math facts. 3.  Reading - Read each night for 15 minutes.

  24. Field Trips Trips will be planned in advance. All fees should be paid before the due date and accompanied by the parent signed permission slip.

  25. Dates 9/22 Pelican’s Nest (Down by the Bay) 11:45-1:45 *I will need 5 parent chaperones – 2 who are willing to wear waders and go in the water. Nov.-Creative Outlet performance (walking field trip) 2/1 Pelican’s Nest-STEAM 12:15-1:30 Spring- Bellingrath Gardens

  26. Lunch Room Please make sure your child’s lunch account stays current. Check the menu and send money weekly or monthly if at all possible. Include your child’s lunch number on all checks. Lunches may also be paid online at MySchoolBucks.com. There is a link on the Baldwin County website. Students have 10 minutes of silent lunch at the beginning of each lunch period.

  27. Guest Readers If you are interested in being a guest reader, please send me an email to schedule a convenient time.

  28. Car Riders If your child is a car rider, you will be issued a yellow sign for your car. Please place it in the window of your car and leave it in place until your child is safely inside.

  29. Additional Information • Please review the FES Student Handbook online. • Birthdays – Invitations should be made to all students or mailed. Only healthy birthday treats can be served. • Student Insurance – Good price if your child needs a policy. • Snack Cost - $.50 Lunch$2.50 Milk $.50 • Send all checks separately • PTC

  30. More Information • Absences: • Please send either parent note/ doctor excuse within 3 days of absence. • Trips (limit 3 days per year) must be pre-approved by sending a note or emailing Mrs. Pierce. • jgpierce@bcbe.org
