Textbook examples Page 159 • Spratly Islands in the South China Sea • These have been claimed by 6 different nation even though no one inhabits the island. • Brunei, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam have made attempts to build structures to keep a small group of defenders on the island • Vietnam has 14 small islands and China has 6. • In 1995 China build some buildings and placed their flag on Mischief reef, which is a small island a few meters across. This was recently regarded as a part of the Philippines. • China has placed troops and additional military war ships to make sure the troops stay safe.

Cont. • 1981 Jimmy Carter declared they had the right to treat any attempt to control the Persian gulf as an assault on the vital interests of the united states. • The USA has spent tens of billions of dollars each year maintaining a military presence in the Middle East. • As oil becomes more scarce, major exporters are likely to become more influential in world politics, unless we have a widespread shift to alternative energy.

Energy (oil) crisis of 1973 • Arab-Israeli War • Arab nation reduced the supply to USA and the western world in an effort to lessen their support for Israeli. • USA helped to restock weapons and warfare in Israeli • USA became concerned about the political leverage associated with imported oil

  6. Cont. • 1977 constructed the Strategic Petroleum reserve. • Oil was stored in a string of Louisiana abandoned salt mines. • Initial aim was to store 1 million barrels which could be used in the even of a supply discontinuation. • SPR currently holds roughly 700 million barrels.

Other Conflicts • Other Examples: • Niger Delta- will take a closer look at this one later • Venezuela • Hugo Chavez was hostile to George Bush when the USA voiced concerns in regards to its reliance on Venezuela's oil supplies. • Feb 2008 Venezuela oil company stopped selling crude oil to Exxon Mobil. • This was in response to the American oil company's move to use the courts to seize billions of dollars of Venezuela's assets. • Venezuela threatened to cut off supply to the USA
