  2. MESH-WPAN Application and Usage Scenarios Myung J. Lee, Chunhui Zhu Samsung Lab @ CCNY M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  3. Application #1 : Low Rate Sensor Mesh Network • Low transmission power and long battery live for sensor nodes; • Large coverage area of monitoring and control; • Reliable sensory data transmission via multiple paths. M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  4. Usage Scenarios (1/8) • Asset management assistance • Touch/Pressure sensors (e.g. art works, windows and doors) • Audio and video surveillance • Smoke and gas sensors • Structural integrity/health monitoring (bridges, tunnels and highways) M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  5. Usage Scenarios (2/8) • Building/Home Automation • Temperature/Humidity, Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning monitoring and controls • Light sensor and remote light switch • Remote Dimmer Control • Occupancy/Activity Sensor • Damper/Fan/Valve controls M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  6. Usage Scenarios (3/8) • Defense/Homeland Security • Battlefield monitoring • C/B/N threat detection • Subway/Rail/Bus monitoring • Infrastructure Monitoring M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  7. Usage Scenarios (4/8) • Industrial • Machine condition monitoring • Inventory tracking and surveillance • Supply chain management • Process monitoring • Temperature/Pressure/Flow monitoring M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  8. Usage Scenarios (5/8) • Agricultural • Crop disease / nutrient management • Microclimate monitoring • Transportation • Traffic monitoring/management • Fleet management M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  9. Usage Scenarios (6/8) • Retail • Inventory management • Alarms / building security • Healthcare • Hospital personnel and equipment tracking • Inventory tracking • Patient monitoring/management M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  10. Usage Scenarios (7/8) • Research • Habitat monitoring • Remote Ecological Sensor Network (e.g. endangered species of plants) • Environment Observation and Forecasting System • Weather • Environmental pollution • Seismic sensing M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  11. Usage Scenarios (8/8) • Automatic meter readings • Gas/Water/Electric • Active tags • Personnel tracking (e.g. coal mine security) • Ship/Airplane monitoring and control M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  12. Application #2 : High Rate Data/Media Mesh Network • For high rate data applications, mesh networks can be used to provide • Higher throughput (via multipaths); • Extended communication range; • Multi-tier networks combining high/low rate devices; • Frequency/time reuse; • Reliability/Robustness. M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  13. Usage Scenarios (1/2) • Video and audio streams go through different paths and integrated into a single AV session at the destination; • The I, B and P frames of an MPEG video stream go through different paths and integrated into a single MPEG video at the destination; The devices can determine to accept one or more streams depending on their capability. M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung

  14. Usage Scenarios (2/2) • Multiple paths between the source and the destination, either being uses simultaneously or in a main-path/backup-path manner, provides low latency and robustness; • Replacement of IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0. M. Lee, C. Zhu / Samsung
