AAU • established in May 2018 • 930 students - 3 advisors – 4 Schools • 1st year students + some 2nd year (planning to change major/School) • peer-advising office • organized events/programs: *1st year parents orientation *Group advising sessions during Orientation *Majors' Fair for first-year undergraduate students *Mock registration *Support program for first-year probation students
AAU – plans for AY 2019/2020 • working with 5th year students + at risk students • extend the Support program for probation students from all years of study • information sessions for parents of 1st year students during the Orientation week • first year seminars –Fall 19 • Mock registration, Majors’ Fair (first-year undergraduate/NUFYP)

SHSS Year 1 Curriculum • Economics Major • ECON 101 Introduction to Microeconomics • ECON 102 Introduction to Macroeconomics • MATH 161 Calculus I • Political Science and International Relations Major • PLS 120 Introduction to Political Theory • PLS 140 Introduction to Comparative Politics • PLS 150 Introduction to International Relations • Sociology/Anthropology Majors • At least one course in Sociology/Anthropology (any course that starts with abbreviation SOC/ANT) • World Languages, Literature and Culture/History Majors • NO special requirements
Important • GEOL 101 Principles of Geology isthe only GEOL course which will satisfy the natural sciences requirement • PLS 101 Introduction to Political Sciences does count as a PLS elective • ANT 160 Introduction to Biological Anthropology will satisfy the natural sciences requirement • ANT 181 Introduction to Medical Anthropology will satisfy the social science elective for those not majoring in Anthropology • SHSS 391 Writing Fellows II – Practicum in Composition & Collaboration counts as a social science course • Turkology classes will be counted as Humanities
Registration Hold (aka Advisor’s Hold) • Registration Hold (checkbox) can be: • Checked • Unchecked • Checked – in this case a student is not able to add/drop a course • when a student has sent the schedule for approval • when an advisor has approved the student’s schedule • when the hold is manually put by an advisor for some reason • Unchecked – in this case a student is able to add/drop a course • when the schedule has been denied by an advisor • when the hold is manually removed by an advisor
Advising Status • Not Registered – student has not yet registered for any course • Changed – waiting for student’s action, i.e. student registered for some courses, but has not sent the schedule for approval yet • Pending – student sent the schedule for approval to the advisor; the advisor is required to check the schedule, then either approve or deny it. • Approved – the student’s schedule has been approved by the advisor • Denied – the student’s schedule has been denied by the advisor
Processing of Schedule Approval Request • Find the students with the Pending status in the advisees’ list • Double click on such a student to see the enrolled courses • If the enrolled courses • fit the student’s degree plan, click Approve • do not fit the student’s degree plan, click Deny, and provide a reason.
Pending Registration • Students who are taking a pre-requisite in the current term • Registration for an upper-level course is recorded with Pending status • After the final grades have been posted, students are either dropped from or added to the course that’s been registered as pending • Pending registration is counted into the credits enrolled until it’s checked
Retake Policy • Retaking a course is granted for a student who receives a grade that would prevent academic progress in his or her program of study • No limit to the number of times a student may retake a course • No limit to the number of eligible courses for which retakes are permitted • All attempts remain in the student’s record and on the transcript • Only the last retake is counted in the final CGPA and total earned credits
Academic Policies and Procedures • min 24ECTS (underload is permitted only with an approval from the Dean and Vice Provost) • max 36ECTS (overload is permitted only with an approval from the Dean and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs) • Withdrawal only once for the same course • Under no circumstances may a student be on academic probation more than two consecutive semesters or for more than three semesters in total • Academic warning notice after the midterm status reports

Advising notes: recommendations • Process notes can most effectively protect advisors and the institution from the claim that • “no one told me,” or “I didn’t know.”

Describe when and why exception have been made (ex. withdrawal, requisite override) • What was suggested? Describe the recommendations given (ex. courses recommended for registration)
