A schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor working in over 1,600 middle schools and high schools in 24 states and 15 countries A professional development program providing training throughout the U.S. Advancement Via Individual Determination What is AVID?

  3. The Mission of AVID AVID is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, and most especially the least served students in the middle capable of completing a college preparatory path: • will succeed in rigorous curriculum, • will enter mainstream activities of the school, • will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and • will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

The AVID Elective Course • Grades 6-12 with grade-specific curriculum • Required for all AVID students • Taught by trained AVID teacher • AVID materials support (“AVID Libraries”) • Course provides students with skills to help them succeed in college-preparatory classes • Tutorials take place at least 2X weekly in AVID class

  6. The AVID Student Profile Students with Academic Potential • Average to High Test Scores (Basic to Advanced) • 2.0-4.0 GPA • College Potential with Support • Desire and Determination! May meet One or More of the Following: • First in their family to attend college • Historically underserved in 4-year colleges • Low income • Special circumstances • Male gender

Implementing school wide student use of the binder to improve organizational and study skills Use of Cornell notes across the content areas for uniformity and effectiveness Use of strong reading and writing activities in all the core academic courses to increase proficiency Use of inquiry and effective critical thinking in all core classes (tutorials, Socratic seminars, etc.) Pushing and supporting students in all classes to have at least 85% of AVID students receive Cs or better AVID School Wide Goals

  12. Good quality, 3-ring binder, 2” or 3” rings with pocket inserts. Five to six colored tab subject dividers to separate each academic class, including AVID. Zipper pouch to store supplies (3-hole punched heavy duty zip-lock bags also work). Two or more pens. Two or more pencils. Filler paper (some notebook paper is now available in Cornell note style). Assignment calendar for each academic class. Tutorial logs. Learning logs. Binder Contents

  13. One or two trapper pouches (for paper with no holes punched in it). One or more colored highlighter pens. Notebook dictionary and / or thesaurus. Calculator. Six-inch ruler. Tips on note taking and test-taking skills, tutorial guidelines, or other AVID strategy sheets. Sample of note taking in specific subjects. Suggested Binder Contents

  15. History of Cornell Notes • Developed in 1949 at Cornell • University by Walter Pauk. • Designed in response to frustration • over student test scores. Meant to • be easily used as a test study guide. • Adopted by most major law schools • as the preferred note taking method.
