  1. AVID- Please get out your notes from this week about college. Turn in any missing assignments into the bin.

Average GPA’s for Universities • Colleges are increasingly competitive and admissions requirements are becoming higher and more difficult • Why do you think colleges are being so selective now-a-days with who they admit? • Write down a guess for the average high school GPA of an incoming freshmen at your favorite college.

  3. What is a GPA? • GPA stands for Grade Point Average • Unweighted GPA: • A=4 • B= 3 • C= 2 • D=1 • F=0 • Weighted GPA (for honors, AP classes): • A=5 • B= 4 • C= 3 • D=2 • F=0

  4. Practice Time! • Calculate the unweighted GPA for the following student: • Language arts: 82 (= 3) • Math: 85 (= 3) • Science: 93 (= 4) • Geography: 95 (= 4) • AVID: 98 (= 4) • PE: 100 (= 4) • Orchestra: 100 (= 4) Total points= 26/7= 3.71

  5. Practice Time! • Calculate the weighted GPA for the following student: • English Honors: 82 (= 4) • Algebra Honors: 85 (= 4) • Science Honors: 93 (= 5) • AP Geography: 95 (= 5) • AVID: 98 (= 4) • PE: 100 (= 4) • Orchestra: 100 (= 4) Total points= 30/7= 4.29

  6. University of Florida • The average incoming freshmen GPA for the University of Florida is above a 4.0!! • UF has the hardest admission requirements of any school in the state of Florida, making it difficult to get acceptance.

  7. Florida State University • The average incoming freshmen GPA for Florida State University, FSU is 3.50

  8. University of South Florida • The average incoming freshmen GPA for the University of South Florida, USF is 3.80

  9. University of Miami • The average incoming freshmen GPA for the University of Miami, UM is 3.48

  10. University of Texas • The average incoming freshmen GPA for the University of Texas, UT is 3.72

  11. University of Georgia • The average incoming freshmen GPA for the University of Georgia is 3.80

  12. University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) • The average incoming freshmen GPA for the UCLA is 4.35

  13. Harvard College • The average incoming freshmen GPA for Harvard College is 5.00!!!!

  14. In the summary section: • Write down what your current GPA is. • Write down your dream college. • Do you think your current GPA is good enough to get you into your dream college?

  15. Thursday Oct 14th**3-day weekend!!** • Please turn in your learning log #7 and submit any writing samples into your writing portfolio (remember by the end of next week, you need to have 9 things in there!!) • Get out a piece of paper and put the proper heading on it. • Also, please get out your notes from this week.

  16. WRITING ASSIGNMENT • Writing prompt: pretend it is 7 years from now, you are currently enrolled at your dream college, in your favorite place, studying your dream major. Describe what your life is like. Be descriptive and use details. **Your writing assignment should be at least a page. If you need outside resources (websites, brochures, etc.) see Mrs. Chase for help. If you don’t finish in class you will need to finish it and turn it in on Monday. Good luck and be creative!! If you finish before class is over, turn it into the bin and get caught up on work from another class. Once I grade this and give it back to you, turn into writing portfolio.
