  1. AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination

  2. What AVID is? • AVID is a program for the “middle to upper middle” academic students. These students have the potential for honors and AP work in high school, but need academic or other support paired with this rigorous curriculum. AVID is a program to help students achieve their goal of acceptance into a four year university.

  3. What AVID is? • AVID combines rigor with support that includes the student’s own individual determination and the support of teachers, other AVID students and their families, the AVID teacher, and tutors. • Students must maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA throughout the school year.

  4. What AVID is Not? • AVID is not an “at risk” program. It is a program designated to support students, who may not otherwise attend a four year university, to attend and to graduate from a four-year school. • AVID is not for students who don’t do any of their homework. • AVID is not a study hall.

  5. What AVID is Not? • AVID is not for the consistently “D” or “F” student. • AVID is not a program for unmotivated students. They must have Individual Determination. • AVID is not a magical cure! It is a tool to help students succeed!

  6. Who is an AVID Student? • Students who currently have a 2.0 to 3.5 G.P.A. and average to high CST (California Standards Test) scores. • Students with high academic potential. • Student who received a recommendation from one of their 7th grade teachers.

AVID Grade • 20% - Cornell Notes (two per week) • 20% - Binder and Grade Checks (every other week) • 20% - Participation in AVID curriculum: Writing Assignments, Socratic Seminars, Group Activities and Projects, Fun Friday Planning, etc. • 20% Tutorials • 20% - Reading Goal (10 points) AVID does not have homework.
