  2. Think and Wonder What do you know about how vehicles move? What do you know about how they are designed? Today, you’ll think about these questions. Plus, you’ll design your first vehicle. What requirements must it meet? o

  8. Scientific Teams: • Team A: Caitlin, Vadim,Colten • Team B: Andrea, Adam, Jason • Team C: Aaron, Kaylee, Blake • Team D: Ami, Cameron, Andrew • Team E: Katie, Britnie, Dominque • Team F: Haley, Kaytlyn, Alex • Team G: Frank, Gabriela, Devon Remember your color o

  9. Link to LRB Team Roles • Recorder: records information to be shared with the class and records observations on the group record sheet. • Reporter: communicates the group’s ideas to the class and reads instructions to the group. • Investigator:asks questions of the teacher, as needed, while the group works. • Materials Manager:picks up the group’s materials from the distribution center, helps the group return materials to the center, and makes certain all materials are inventoried and in order. • Moderator: keeps the group on task, makes certain each member has a chance to contribute, and helps the team work together. o

  10. Let’s Get Started! • Materials Manager, please collect the following from the distribution center: • A bucket of building pieces labeled with YOUR team letter. o

  11. Have some fun! • This is your time to “Free Explore” the building pieces. o

  12. What did you discover during “free exploration” of the building pieces? o

  13. Link to LRB Materials Manager, please collect the following from the distribution center: Tips on Using the Building Pieces. Everyone: glue this into your LRB. o

  14. Your Challenge: In 20 minutes or less, design and build a vehicle (cart) that will move at least 100 cm (39 in). How will you test whether your vehicles meet the requirements? Axle o

  15. Frustrated? Keep in mind that this is our “getting started” lesson. You will have many opportunities throughout the unit to design, build, and test how vehicles move. o

  16. Link to LRB Laboratory Record Book: • How did you get your vehicle to move? • What was one problem your group encountered while building the vehicle? How did you solve the problem? o

  17. Finishing up: Do NOT take your vehicle apart! • Materials Manager: mark your vehicle with a small piece of masking tape marked with the group’s letter. • Carefully place your completed vehicle on the distribution center. You will use the vehicle again in Lesson 2. • Return all extra building pieces and other materials to the group’s bucket. • Return the bucket to the distribution center. o
