  1. Electric Vehicles By: Evan Okrzesik & James Gancer

  2. What is an Electric Vehicle? • Have an electric only drive-train • There is no energy conversion • The energy is stored within the car’s large battery pack

  3. Differences between Gasoline and Electric Cars • The gasoline engine is replaced by an electric motor • The electric motor gets its power from a controller • The controller gets its power from an array of rechargeable batteries

  4. Economy Greatly reduce oil consumption Also greatly reduces our independence on foreign oil Environment Reduces greenhouse gases Also reduces urban pollutants Why use Electric Vehicles?

  5. Hybrids Vs. EV’s • Which alternate seems to be the better choice?

  6. Pros Cheaper than EV’s Longer distances can be driven without refueling Cons The gain of efficiency would take time Still we would be dependant on oil Hybrids

  7. Pros Excellent energy efficiency Independence from foreign oil Cons Start off expensive Limited lifetime due to uncertain batteries Limited range EV’s

  8. Charging Rates for an EV • Estimated 1 min/mile charge time at 10 kW • 10 miles in 1 minute with 100 kW • A fully charged car in 20 minutes with 100 kW

  9. How exactly does an Electric Vehicle work? • Click Here!

  10. The Infamous GM story • So why hasn’t the EV been created yet? • Poor driving range • Long charging times • Lack of funding with no profits in sight for GM • The infrastructure of chargers • And at the time-Low gas prices

  11. GM’s future plans • Bob Lutz, the GM man running the new EV program said, “Now, it turns out that from a PR standpoint probably the dumbest move we ever made.” • Gm is building a new Lithium-Ion battery for the mass market • Multimillion-dollar efforts are taking place in GM’s private labs today. • The GM Volt is expected near 2010

  12. The future for EV’s • New battery technology must be created for longer range • New car frames and materials for more appeal and better design • Charging spots must be implemented throughout the country
