Meet Thomas Moore • Thomas Moore was born in 1779 and died in 1852 at age 73 • He was remembered as a cultural patriot who used poetry and song to advance his countries cause • He composed lyrics that were meant to be sung in the tunes of old Irish folk songs • He went to Trinity college in 1795 which was recently allowed entry for Catholics • A girl named Lena Angese encouraged him with his works

Imagery Stanza One Imagery is the image that forms in your mind that is created by words The time I’ve lost in wooing, In watching and pursuing The light, that lies In woman’s eyes, Has been my heart’s undoing. Though Wisdom oft has sought me, I scorn’d the lore she brought me, My only books Were woman’s looks, And folly’s all they’ve taught me Imagery is used in lines 2-3 on the left. To me, these lines create the image of bright and intense sparkling of a woman’s eyes.

Stanza Two Metaphor A metaphor is a comparison between two things that don’t use the words like or as Her smile when Beauty granted, I hung with gaze enchanted, Like him the Sprite, Whom maids by night Oft meet in glen that’s haunted. Like him, too, Beauty won me, But while her eyes were on me, If once their ray Was turn’d away, Oh! winds could not outrun me. He is comparing how fast he can run to the wind. He is saying that he can run faster than the wind.

C Like him, too, Beauty won me, D But while her eyes were on me,D If once their ray E Was turn’d away, E Oh! winds could not outrun me. D And are those follies going? A And is my proud heart growing A Too cold or wise B For brilliant eyes B Again to set it glowing? A No, vain, alas! th’ endeavour C From bonds so sweet to sever; C Poor Wisdom’s chance D Against a glance D Is now as weak as ever.C

  6. Stucture The poem has • 3 stanzas • 30 lines • End rhyme • Off-rhyme Poem’s speaker The poems speaker is a love struck man-because throughout the poem the poet is talking about heartbreak and women

  7. ‘The light that lies in woman’s eyes” This line is saying that way a woman draws/lures him in with her eyes and soul

  8. “Has been my heart’s undoing” This line means that the more women mess with his heart the more damaged it gets.

  9. “From bonds so sweet to sever” This line means that the women hold him back and he doesn’t like it but at the same time he does like it.

  10. “If once her ray was turned away, Oh! Winds could not outrun me.” These lines means that is she ever started trying to leave him that he would be so quick to catch her and get her eyes back on him that winds couldn’t even outrun him.

Literal Figurative Figurative is the type of language used by the poet to convey the thoughts/meanings to the reader by saying one thing but meaning another, by using hidden meanings and creative wording in their poems. Literal is the type of language used by the poet to convey the actual thoughts/beliefs or point that the poet is trying to get across to the reader Ex. When I watched a comedy show I died laughing Literal- I died Figurative- The show was so funny I couldn’t stop laughing

  12. Literal Meaning I think that the literal meaning of this poem is that the poet has a rough time with women. Figurative Meaning I think that the figurative meaning is that the poet has not physically lost time in wooing, because as the title stated, “The Time I’ve Lost in Wooing” he says that he lost time but time cannot be lost. He simply suggests that he wasted too much time on relationships.

  13. Authors Purpose The authors purpose for writing this poem was to tell the readers about how women lure guys in and lead them on, just to break there heart. Also, that he has had a lot of bad pasts with women and doesn’t know if he will actually find one that cares about him to repair his heart. Intended theme The intended theme of this poem is heart-break, relationships, love, and women.
