  1. Self-Control “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” 1 Cor. 9:27 NKJV “Temperance” - 2 Peter 1:6 = Self-Control

  2. Self-Control Romans 6:3-4 = buried with him in baptism Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

  3. “Without control, there can be no freedom.”

  4. NO “your bodies as instruments of righteousness to God.” Romans 6:13b BBE “Without control, there can be no freedom.”

  5. What is it ? “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:13 Self-control is that ability to discipline or control our life under Jesus Christ as Lord. Hebrews 5:14 (ESV) “…trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

  6. Why do we need it ? Prov. 25:28 “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”

  7. Our appetites, desires and passions have been compared to “wild horses”. “These wild horses should not be repressed but expressed.” Sigmund Freud “God did not design the flesh to rule”

  8. These “wild horses” need to be harnessed ! Col. 3:5 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication ncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence (desire), and covetousness, which is idolatry.” Mortify = put to death, subdue Rom. 13:14 “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”

  9. Unless we are “harnessed” we cannot do anything ! Niagra Falls Self Control is needed to enjoy life. “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

  10. How do we get it ? "Then He said to them all, if anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." (Luke 9:23) “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Gal. 5:24 “I have been crucified with Christ” Gal. 2:20 Give account at judgment - 2 Cor. 5:10

  11. What happens when We don’t have it ? Eve ate the forbidden fruit - Gen. 3:6 Achan took silver and gold - Joshua 7:21 David sinned with Bathsheba - 2 Sam. 11:2-4 Works of the Flesh - Gal. 5:19-21 “Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:”

  14. Must be taught In the family Proverbs Prov. 22:15 “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” Proverbs 23:13 - 14 “Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.” Discipline

  15. Discipline of Children Not for revenge - showing who is the Boss To teach self-discipline “The correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement” If a child does not learn self-control in the home then they will have trouble throughout their lifetime.
