  2. Objectives • Summarize how sociologists define the terms race, ethnicity&minority group • Identify the characteristics that distinguish minority groups from one another • Analyze the most common patterns of minority group treatment

  3. Race • category of people who share inherited physical characteristics &whom others see as being a distinct group

  4. Ethnicity • the set of cultural characteristics that distinguishes one group from another

  5. Minority Group • group of people who, because of their physical characteristics or cultural practices, are singled out &unequally treated (Louis Wirth)

  6. Discrimination • denial of equal treatment based on group membership • denotes action or behavior • can be either legal or institutionalized

  7. Prejudice • unsupported generalization about a category of people • involves attitudes • can be in favor of a group

  10. Cultural Pluralism • ethnic & racial variety is encouraged • allows groups to keep their own unique cultural identities

  11. Assimilation • culturally distinct groups blended into a single group with common culture • ideas of “melting pot” & “tossed salad” • often happens naturally but, when forced, can cause conflict

  14. Segregation • minority group physically separated from dominant group • de jure:based on laws • de facto: based on informal norms

  15. Subjugation • dominant group controls every aspect of minority group life through force • slavery: most extreme form

  16. Population Transfer • dominant group moves minority group to new locations within or outside the country • Native Americans: “Trail of Tears” (1830s)

  17. Extermination • dominant group attempts to destroy minority group • genocide • Kosovo of ethnic Albanians by Serbs • Holocaust of Jews by Nazis • Rwanda of Tutsis by Hutus • Darfur of Christians by Sudanese Muslims
