  5. Dimensions of Self • Each of these dimensions can affect your health, success, and happiness • Having healthy development of these dimensions will lead to a well-rounded college student! • There are also skills and abilities associated with each element of wellness Week Eleven

  6. Why Is This Important? • So why does this matter for YOU? • New college students experience many transitions • High School → College • Work → College • Transitions tend to increase stress! • So what are the components of physical wellness? Week Eleven

  7. Nutrition Quick Facts: • The food you eat provides you with the required energy • Less than 40% of first-year college students report they maintain a healthy diet • Ever heard of the “freshman 15”? • What can you do to improve your nutrition? • MyPlate Week Eleven

  8. Nutrition • Quick Facts: • Reduce intake of fried/fatty foods • Stay away from processed foods • Eliminate junk-food snacks • Eat fresh fruit and veggies • Eat whole grains • Eat fish • Be aware of what you are eating! Week Eleven

  9. Exercise • Quick Facts: • Exercise is natural • Helps your heart • Helps your immune system (very important for you!) • Reduces stress • Strengthens bones and muscles • Promotes weight loss • Helps your mind Week Eleven

  11. Rest and Sleep • Quick Facts: • This is so very important for college students • Restores and preserves your immune system • Helps you cope with stress • Helps your brain form and store memories • How much sleep do YOU need? • Research shows you are NOT getting enough! Week Eleven

  12. Rest and Sleep • Quick Facts: • With lack of sleep, decreased performance • Correlation between lack of sleep and grades • Get into a sleep routine • ENERGY drinks and caffeine WILL impact your ability to sleep Week Eleven

  13. Stress and Anxiety • Quick Facts: • College students are entering college with more stress • Not all stress is bad • However, it turns “ugly” when it is extreme and excessive and remains for long periods of time • Do you feel stressed? What are the signs? Week Eleven

Alcohol, Drugs, and Risky Behavior • Quick Facts: • Alcohol may be readily available • Alcohol abuse is the number one drug problem on college campuses • Binge drinking is very common (2+ students out of every 5) • Binge drinking increases risky behaviors • Other drugs in college campuses as well Week Eleven
