Sankara Eye Care Institutions & Sankara Eye Foundation • 1/5th of the world’s blind population, 45 million, are in India • 80% of them are curable blindness, but most can’t afford quality care • Sankara Eye Care Institutions, India, has been providing quality eye care, with #1 rural out-reach program for over 30 years with the state of the art Sankara Eye Hospitals • Provides quality eye care to the poor with a group of facilities which are among the best in the world. • SEF, run entirely by volunteers, raises funds in USA to help build Sankara Eye Hospitals throughout India • Instrumental in growing # of hospitals from 1 in ‘98 to 8 in ’08 • Help each hospital become self sufficient (80% free, 20% paying) Goal: Provide one million free surgeries per year by year 2020
