  5. PROMOTION POLICY • To pass to the next grade you must: • Pass Math • Pass Language Arts:(Reading/& English) • Pass Science • Pass Social Studies • Overall Average=70

  6. Bradley Schedule 8:25 A.M. – 3:40 P.M. Lunch is 30 minutes.

  7. Level Descriptions of Courses Offered • Regular- Planned for the student whose record of achievement is generally average or above average as well as for the student who needs to raise the achievement level. • Pre-AP- Planned for the student whose record of achievement is consistently above average and who will benefit from a rich, rigorous curriculum and the challenges offered by the Advanced Placement Program. *Parent permission. • Special Education- planned for the student who meets TEA disability criteria and placement in these courses must be made through the ARD process. • *Parent permission. • Gifted & Talented- planned for the student identified by NEISD criteria in English, Math, or both. Scores are valid for up to 2 years. *Parent permission. • 5th graders must test and qualify for secondary (6th-12th) • Dual Language- planned for the student who has participated in the dual language program since the Kindergarten grade. *Parent permission. • English as a Second Language (ESL): planned for the student who’s primary language is other than English and must meet criteria. *Parent permission.

  8. 7th Grade Course Requirements STAAR: (in English) Writing, Math & Reading *To be in the Dual Language program, you must have been enrolled since Kindergarten.

  9. 8th Grade Course Requirements STAAR: (in English) Math, Reading (required to pass to be promoted to 9th grade) Science, Social Studies Algebra I-EOC (required for HS graduation) *To be in the Dual Language program, you must have been enrolled since Kindergarten.

  10. Physical Education • 4 semesters of PE are required in middle school with at least 1 semester per year. • All 7th grader students must take a full year of either P. E. or Athletics • All 8th grade students may take either a semester of P.E., a full year of PE, or a full year of Athletics • In 8th grade, the semester of PE can be taken with a semester of high school Health course. • Students will participate in the Fitnessgram Physical Fitness Assessment (cardiovascular endurance (PACER), BMI (calculated using height and weight), muscular strength/endurance (pushups/sit ups), and flexibility (trunk lift/arm stretch). • All students are REQUIRED to dress out in their PE uniform every day. Uniforms (PE shirt & shorts) can be purchased online. PARTICIPATION= 60% PREPARATION=30% UNIT ASSESSMENT=10%

  11. Off-Campus Physical Education • Some students participate in Olympic-level sports that are not offered within the Physical Education and/or Athletic Departments. The OCPE program allows students to receive substitution credits for Physical Education by utilizing off-campus commercially-sponsored physical activities as defined by Chapter 74. • Olympic-level participation and/or competition includes a minimum of 15 hours per week of highly intensive, professional supervised training from a NEISD approved site. • Students qualifying and participating at this level may be dismissed from school one hour per day and may not miss any class other than physical education by choosing to Arrive Late (2nd period) or Early Dismissal (8th period) on the application. • Student will participate in a PE class until the application is approved by NEISD Physical Education and Health Department. • Schedule will be changed once the student’s counselor receives notification of approval from NEISD PE department. • *****Students and parents will apply for OCPE via the Parent Portal.

ATHLETICS 7th & 8th GRADE • Athletics is a PE credit and counts for 2 semesters per year. • You must participate in at least 2 team sports and commit to one full year. • Morning or after school participation is required. • You must be passing all classes and have good behavior. *NO PASS, NO PLAY RULE Football is recommended for boys. Volleyball is recommended for girls. Basketball & Track Coach must sign your card for approval (if a coach does not sign it, you will be placed in PE) 2. A physical is required PRIOR to tryouts and participation 3. Student/Parent must sign commitment form

READING/ MATH WORKSHOP • We want all students to be able to take an elective class, so please take every opportunity like doing homework, paying attention in class or going to tutoring to ensure you do well on the STAAR test. • Students not meeting previous standards in state assessments /benchmark data/grades • Targeted intervention on TEKS objectives • Workshop substituted for Elective class-full year • Students will also be enrolled in regular reading/math class • 8th grade students taking Reading workshop class will earn a high school elective credit for Academic Literacy

College & Career Readiness NEISD has an initiative to ensure that after high school, all students are prepared to enter √ A four-year college or university √ A junior or community college √ A trade or technical school √ The military √ The workforce • Taking rigorous courses in middle school prepares students for college and career course work in high school • Students wishing to rank in the top 10% of their high school class need to pursue rigorous academic courses to prepare for high school (UT Austin 7%)

Pre- Advanced Placement Courses • Pre-AP courses are available to any students willing to take on the academic challenges. • These courses are above-level instruction or on-level with minimal support designed to challenge self-motivated students to understand rigorous content. (faster-paced instruction models) • The coursework requires students to engage in independent and analytical assignments and to complete a substantial amount of work outside of class. (read one novel per nine weeks-student’s choice) • Lexile reading level above 1000. A counselor/teacher recommendation is strongly encouraged based on grades, benchmarks, previous STAAR scores AND work ethic.

  18. Pre-AP GUIDELINES • Student and Parent must sign the Advanced Program Expectation and Course Agreement Form on the back of the course selection card. If it is not signed, the student will not be placed in a Pre-AP class. • Students must be in a Pre-AP Math in 6th grade to be in Pre-Algebra in 7th grade, and in 7th grade Pre-Algebra to be in 8th grade Algebra I. • The exit point for Pre-AP course is either at the end of the first three weeks or at the end of the nine-week grading period. If these exit points are missed, then the student will remain in the course for the remainder of the semester. • A teacher-parent conference is required and teacher must submit Add/Drop form to counselor for a schedule change to be placed in a regular class.

  21. ART I Introduces students to Art with a variety of projects based in Art history in various cultures around the world. Students will focus on the elements and principles of art and design to create and critique art using a variety of materials. ART II Intermediate class with in depth exploration of the influences of history and culture in Art. Students will use the elements of art and design to create and critique creative expressive original artwork using a variety of materials. Prerequisite Art I. ART III Advanced class. Students will build their portfolios utilizing the skills learned in the previous courses. Students will evaluate their work based on the elements and principles of art and design. Includes collaborative and larger scale projects. Prerequisite: Art II. Teachers: Taylor Galvan, Kim Villarreal

  22. THEATRE I An introductory course where students get their first opportunity to explore the basics of theatre, performance, improvisation, and on-stage creativity. THEATRE II & THEATRE III Advanced course utilizes advanced character and scene work, improvisation, voice and movement training, theatre history, and memorization. Fall Production/UIL One-Act Play Competition; District Speech Festivals, and Mad Props (Bradley’s Theatre Club) Teacher: Tyler Keyes **Spring audition required**

  23. BAND II, III Symphonic, Concert, and Honor Bands. Students must have one or more years of concert band experience. (rank 1st choice) JAZZ BAND Students must have one or more years of concert band or orchestra experience. Students starting jazz band for the first time must attend summer camp July 31-August 11, 2018. (rank 2nd choice) *Students participate in concerts throughout year and you must also participate in several social events, contests, and trips during the school year. * Auditions in the Spring will determine level of placement, advanced bands. You must be in Band to participate in Jazz Band. Teachers: Emily Gurwitz & Jett Walker

Director: Casey Newman Teacher: Amy Ballenger Junior Varsity and Varsity Choir Concert, Advanced Honors-top performing 7th /8th graders must have previous experience. Students participate in concerts throughout year and you must also participate in several social events, contests, and trips during the school year. * Auditions in the Spring will determine level of placement.

  26. AIM ACADEMIC INDIVIDUAL MOTIAVTION • Review academic concepts and seek assistance in solving academic problems. (study for test, quizzes, projects, or work with a peer) • Learn independent skills in time management, agenda use and organization (organize binder) • Goal setting and character education • Student responsible for checking Parent Portal on • a daily basis to complete missing assignments 7th grade ONLY FULL YEAR 8th grade SEMESTER OR FULL YEAR

  27. 7th & 8th Grade- FULL YEAR ELECTIVE Application and Interview Required Advancement Via Individual Determination • An in-school academic support program for grades 6-12 • that prepares students for college eligibility and success • Must take one or more Pre-AP academic course(s) • Maintain the AVID binder with assignments/grade sheets and • daily notes in all classes • Complete all homework assignments and commit to studying • every night.   28. 7th & 8th Grade- FULL YEAR ELECTIVE DEBATE I & II 7th & 8th grade Excellent reading and writing skills are necessary. Topics covered area: Student Congress, Public Forum, and Lincoln Douglas debate. Competitive events. Teacher: Marianne Bankhead JOURNALISM Introduction to journalism. Interviewing, news and feature writing, and proofreading. Newspaper layout, basic photography, yearbook production and morning announcements Teacher: Kim Villarreal

  29. 8th Grade- FULL YEAR ELECTIVE JUNIOR PALS-8th grade only The Jr. Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) is a full year course that trains selected 8th grade students to work as peer helpers and peer mediators, and community service learners with students on campus (6th grade PALees) Application and interview is required. See Mrs. Ballenger (Sponsor) for more information. STUDENT AIDE-8th grade only You must have good grades, attendance, and behavior. Pick up application in the counseling office. Attach application to course card with teacher signatures. “Good morning, Bradley MS, this is Kevin-student aide, may I help you?”

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT • **Any HS credit taken in Middle School will not count towards GPA (grade point average) or class ranking. • Algebra I (1.0) • Geometry (1.0) • Health (.5) • Spanish I (1.0) (II, III, IV for dual language students 4.0 credits) • SSI Reading Workshop (1.0 elective) • Career Technology: You may take a maximum of two high school CTE courses as elective credits for Endorsements during middle school. Priority will be given to 8th grade students. • Principles of Applied Engineering (1.0) • Principles of Art A/V, Communication (1.0) • Principles of Hospitality & Tourism (1.0) • Principles of Human Services (1.0) • Principles of Information & Technology (1.0)

  31. FULL YEAR HIGH SCHOOL ELECTIVE CREDIT CAREER & TECHNOLOGY *Priority will be given to 8th grade students-does not count toward ranking PRINCIPLES OF APPLIED ENGINEERING Overview of the various fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and their interrelationships. Students will use a variety of computer hardware/software applications to complete assignments and develop a product or system project. PRINCIPLES OF INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY Students develop computer literacy skills to adapt to emerging technologies used in the global marketplace. Students will also implement personal and interpersonal skills to prepare for a rapidly evolving workplace environment.

FULL YEAR HIGH SCHOOL ELECTIVE CREDIT CAREER & TECHNOLOGY * Priority will be given to 8th grade students- does not count towards class rank PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN SERVICES Personal development and management, family and community and preparation of adult roles, consumer finances, nutrition/dietary practices, counseling and mental health, career exploration in the human services pathway. PRINCIPLES OF HOSPITALITY & TOURISM Management, marketing and operations of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attractions, recreation events and travel related services; Must pass a safety test with 100% to participate in labs

LOTE (Languages Other Than English) 7th grade -SPANISH 1A 8th grade -SPANISH 1B OR 8TH grade ONLY- SPANISH I (1A/1B) (must have passed 1A) • Native Spanish speakers (not dual language students) who write and read Spanish fluently do not select Spanish as one of your choices. You can take a placement test in the spring of your 8th grade year. Please see your counselor to register. • Dual Language students will receive Spanish I, II, III, and IV for taking the required courses: Spanish III-Pre-AP & AP Spanish Language & Culture FULL YEAR=1 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT (does not count toward ranking)

  34. HEALTH EDUCATION (8th GRADE ONLY) 1 semester (.5) fulfills the high school Health requirement and does not count towards class rank. (Includes the study of the human body and the functions of the systems, drug abuse, first aide, CPR, diseases, pollution and its effects, nutrition, exercise, health agencies, and sex education. (see Parent Letter handout)

Students and parents should carefully examine course offerings and course descriptions On your card, choose 3 electives and rank them 1-3 (1 will be your first choice, 2 second choice, etc.) The 1st choice is not guaranteed, but not turning in your course selection card on time may hinder your chances of getting the electives of your choice All changes are due in writing to your counselor by May 11, 2018. NO ELECTIVE CHANGES WILL BE MADE AFTER May 11, 2018 Electives COURSE SELECTION PROCESS-choose wisely
