Research paper Thesis: Many women and some men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, but it can be treated and often cured with early detection. • 232,340 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. • 54,640 women will be diagnosed with non-invasive breast cancer. • 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year. • 2,240 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. • 410 men will die from breast cancer this year • Because of screenings and early detection, the death rates from breast cancer have been declining over the past 25 years. • 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

Physical project Ladies Night Out Program Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) Uninsured/underinsured women Free Breast Exams Free Mammograms Information on breast cancer Help enroll in BCCCP Medicaid once diagnosed Loving/Friendly Workers Mostly paid workers • Uninsured/underinsured women • Free Breast Exams • Free Mammograms • Information on breast cancer • Help after they get diagnosed • Fun environment • Loving/Friendly • Mostly Volunteers • Asheville Radiology

Together the programs • Seen 7,500 women in the last seven years. • Current average of 1,800-1,900 women seen annually. • 36 women have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. • Ladies Night Out- Mission Program; BCHD does the paper work and scheduling. • BCCCP- Buncombe County Health Department program. • Ladies Night Out- Mammograms. • BCCCP- Physicals. • Refers patients to each other

Product Hours • October 5th from 8:00-12:00 Volunteered at a 5k where all the proceeds went to the Ladies Night Out Program. • October 12th from 11:30-4:00 Volunteered at a Bike ride at Harley Davison where all proceeds went to the Ladies Night Out Program. • November 7th from 3:30-5:30 Volunteered at the Ladies Night Out Program at Asheville Radiology. • December 5th from 3:30-5:30 Volunteered at the Ladies Night Out Program at Asheville Radiology.

  9. Mentor • Wanda Anderson • BCCCP and Ladies Night Out • She was amazing with me, she taught me all she knew about breast cancer. • She truly enjoys helping the women catch Breast cancer! • It was such a pleasure working with Wanda and the Ladies Night Out Program.

Mentor Hours • October 5th from 8:00-9:00 Talked to Wanda about what Ladies Night Out Program was and she helped guide me in what to do and say. • October 12th from 4:00-5:00 Interview questions for mentor • October 25th from 8:30-11:30 At the Buncombe County Health Department, I put together paperwork and goodie bags for the Ladies Night Out Program. December 13th from 10:00-11:45 Helped get goodie bags together for Ladies Night Out.

  11. What I’ve learned • About Breast Cancer -Risk Factors -Symptoms/Warning signs -Ways to check for breast cancer -Mammograms -Treatments -Outlook/Life Expectancy • About the Ladies Night Out Program/BCCCP • Ways Early Detection Helps women • How good it feels to volunteer

  12. Successes and Challenges Successes Challenges Switched projects after a 6 weeks. I have a hard time talking in front of people. Writing papers is not my strong spot. • Helping women find Breast Cancer early! • Seeing all the women's lives that Ladies Night Out/BCCCP and Early detection has helped saved their life. • Volunteering • Learning about Breast Cancer

  13. Conclusion • I will continue to volunteer for the Ladies Night Out Program • A lot of women couldn’t do it if it wasn’t for them. • Early Detection is slowing down the number of women dying from Breast Cancer! • Get Breast Exams & Mammograms, they save lives!!!!! 
