  2. Job 38 God Speaks

  3. As we continue through Job • Last time: Chapter 35 & 37 • Study chapter 38 – 41 God comes on the scene and questions Job • Chapter 42 – Job responds to God

  4. Job wants to talk to God. • (Job 23:3-12 NKJV) Oh, that I knew where I might find Him, That I might come to His seat! {4} I would present my case before Him, And fill my mouth with arguments. {5} I would know the words which He would answer me, And understand what He would say to me. {6} Would He contend with me in His great power? No! But He would take note of me.

  5. Job wants to talk to God. • (Job 23:3-12 NKJV) {7} There the upright could reason with Him, And I would be delivered forever from my Judge. {8} "Look, I go forward, but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him; {9} When He works on the left hand, I cannot behold Him; When He turns to the right hand, I cannot see Him. {10} But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

  6. Job wants to talk to God. • (Job 23:3-12 NKJV) {11} My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside. {12} I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food.

  7. God arrives on the scene– What a moment! Job’s wish is granted! • (Job 38:1-3 NKJV) Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: {2} "Who is this who darkens counsel By words without knowledge? {3} Now prepare yourself like a man;I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

  8. The Questions Begin • (Job 38:4 NKJV) "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

  9. Where wast thou? • Where wast thou?” implies that Job was not present. He had not then an existence. He could not, therefore, have aided God, or counselled him, or understood what he was doing. How presumptuous, therefore, it was in one so short-lived to sit in judgment on the doings of him who had formed the world! How little could he expect to be able to know of him! -- Albert Barnes

  10. The Questions Continue • (Job 38:5 NKJV) Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?

  11. Who did the Math Job? • Who hath stretched the line - Who hath formed its zones and its great circles, and adjusted the whole of its magnitude and gravity to the orbit in which it was to move, as well as its distance from that great center about which it was to revolve? These questions show the difficulty of the subject; and that there was an unfathomable depth of counsel and design in the formation of the earth. -- Adam Clarke

  12. What Holds it up? • (Job 38:6 NKJV) To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

  13. Foundations? • Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? - How does it continue to revolve in the immensity of space? What supports it? Has it foundations like a building, and is it fastened with a key-stone, to keep the mighty fabric in union? -- Adam Clarke

  14. What Beings were Present? • (Job 38:7 NKJV) When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

  15. The morning stars • When the morning stars sang together - This must refer to some intelligent beings who existed before the creation of the visible heavens and earth: and it is supposed that this and the following clause refer to the same beings; that by the sons of God, and the morning stars, the angelic host is meant; as they are supposed to be first, though perhaps not chief, in the order of creation.

  16. The morning stars • For the latter clause the Chaldee has, “All the troops of angels.” Perhaps their creation may be included in the term heavens, Gen_1:1 : “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” These witnessed the progress of the creation; and, when God had finished his work, celebrated his wisdom and power in the highest strains. -- Adam Clarke

  17. The bounds of the sea! • (Job 38:8-11 NKJV) "Or who shut in the sea with doors, When it burst forth and issued from the womb; {9} When I made the clouds its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling band; {10} When I fixed My limit for it, And set bars and doors; {11} When I said, 'This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!'

  18. Can you start the day? • (Job 38:12-14 NKJV) "Have you commanded the morning since your days began, And caused the dawn to know its place, {13} That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it? {14} It takes on form like clay under a seal, And stands out like a garment.

  19. Do you withhold strength from the wicked? • (Job 38:15 NKJV) From the wicked their light is withheld, And the upraised arm is broken.

  20. Do you know the size of the earth? • (Job 38:16-18 NKJV) "Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths? {17} Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death? {18} Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.

  21. Do you understand light & darkness? • (Job 38:19-21 NKJV) "Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place, {20} That you may take it to its territory, That you may know the paths to its home? {21} Do you know it, because you were born then, Or because the number of your days is great?

  22. The time of trouble • (Job 38:22-23 NKJV) "Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail, {23} Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?

  23. Is this the time of trouble? • (Rev 16:17 NKJV) Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "It is done!" • (Rev 16:21 NASB) And huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came^ down from heaven upon men; and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, because its plague was^ extremely severe.

  24. What God Reveals • (Amos 3:7 NKJV) Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.

  25. Who Decides How things will be? • (Job 38:24-27 NKJV) By what way is light diffused, Or the east wind scattered over the earth? {25} "Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water, Or a path for the thunderbolt, {26} To cause it to rain on a land where there is no one, A wilderness in which there is no man; {27} To satisfy the desolate waste, And cause to spring forth the growth of tender grass?

  26. Who Made these rules? • (Job 38:28-30 NKJV) Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew? {29} From whose womb comes the ice? And the frost of heaven, who gives it birth? {30} The waters harden like stone, And the surface of the deep is frozen. • Why does ice expand instead of contract? • If it contracted, bodies of water could freeze solid, and all life die in the water.

  27. Can You arrange the stars? • (Job 38:31-33 NKJV) "Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the belt of Orion? {32} Can you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs? {33} Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?

  28. Can you control the weather? • (Job 38:34-35 NKJV) "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That an abundance of water may cover you? {35} Can you send out lightnings, that they may go, And say to you, 'Here we are!'?

  29. Who made your mind? • (Job 38:36 NKJV) Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?

  30. What’s in a cloud? • (Job 38:37-38 NKJV) Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven, (38) When the dust hardens in clumps, And the clods cling together? • Clouds: • BDB Definition: • 1) dust, cloud • 1a) fine dust • 1b) (thin) cloud

  31. Who can number the clouds? • The word here rendered “clouds” is applied to the clouds as made up of “small particles” - as if they were composed of fine dust, and hence, the word number is applied to them, not as meaning that the clouds themselves were innumerable, but that no one could estimate the number of particles which enter into their formation. • -- Albert Barnes

  32. God cares for every animal • (Job 38:39-41 NKJV) "Can you hunt the prey for the lion, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, {40} When they crouch in their dens, Or lurk in their lairs to lie in wait? {41} Who provides food for the raven, When its young ones cry to God, And wander about for lack of food?

  33. Will God overwhelm Job?

  34. Job will Respond • (Job 42:1-6 NKJV) Then Job answered the LORD and said: {2} "I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. {3} You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

  35. Job will Respond • (Job 42:1-6 NKJV) {4} Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, 'I will question you, and you shall answer Me.' {5} "I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You. {6} Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes."

  36. What Can We Say? • God is too wonderful to comprehend. • His majesty has numerous dimensions. • Knowledge as in omniscience! • Power as in omnipotence • Being everywhere at once as omnipresent. • What He has revealed in his word is awesome. • He loves us and cares for every need.

  37. Where now? • Study Chapters 39, 40, and 41 which continue God’s challenging Job. • Study Chapter 42 which is the conclusion of the book. • Decide what is next? • Revelation has been requested. • Study the books of prophecy that remain in the Old Testament.
