State Structure • Three tribes (tribus) • The tribes were divided into 10 wards (curiae) • Earliest senate was based on this structure • 300, so 100 per tribe • Curiae also met as a group and formed the earliest Assembly of Rome • Army composed of 1000 men from each tribe • Calvary composed of 100 men from each tribe

Early Roman Religion • Fides - mutual trustfulness between the gods and between men and women • Men had to maintain this balance through rituals and sacrifice • Group, not individual • Household gods • Thought of the gods as mysterious and unknowable • At first, they did not see the gods as humanlike • Often no representation at all • Not clothed • Began to adopt gods and images from Greeks
