  2. Abouttheauthor It is believed that William Shakespeare was born in 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of his early comedies, composed around 1594. It was written as a light entertainment to accompany a marriage celebration.

  3. More Abouttheauthor William Shakespeare is known as one of the greatest writers of all times. His works are popular as he wrote about human nature and behaviour, and his ideas are as relevant today as they were 400 years ago.

  4. Historicalbackground • ElizabethanEngland: Queen Elizabeth I wastheQueen of England from1533-1603. Thisperiod of British historybecameknown as theElizabethan era. • ElizabethanTheatre: Shakespeare, likemanyotherElizabethanplaywrights, didn’tinvent new plots. • He tookexistingstories and rewrotethemforthestage. • At his time, playswereperformed in open-air, • circular theatres. • Themostfamous of thesewastheGlobe. • MidsummerNight (orEve): In ElizabethanEngland, • thistook place onthenight of 23rd June and wascelebratedwithparties and tales of fairies. Thefollowingday, MidsummerDay, wasthelongestday of theyear, withthesun at itshighestpoint in thesky.

Which character do you admire more and why? • Several characters in the play do surprising things because of love. Give examples of some of these things. • A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy. Find things in the play which make it a comedy.
