  2. Asking for, Giving, and Refusing Favours Rahina Larasati 2201409044

  3. LET’S BUILD OUR KNOWLEDGE! ASKING FOR, GIVING, AND REFUSING A FAVOUR If you are a manager, you probably ask people to do things all the time! But if you ask a friend to do something out of kindness or generosity, you are asking a favour. This is quite easy to do in English, but it's complicated slightly by the fact that we tend to be very polite when we're asking favours.

  4. Shh... Listen! Listen to the audio while reading the passage given to you

  5. REFUSING TO GIVE A FAVOUR Sorry, I can’t. Yes, I do mind. I will, but I can’t. I love to, but I really can’t.

  6. LISTEN AND REPEAT! Listen to the recording and repeat what the speakers say.

  7. Modelling of Text Follow the dialogue! Dialogue 1 Informal Doni is exasperated as his scooter would not start. Tata offers to help him.

  8. Dialogue 2 Formal Mrs. Mimin : Excuse me. May I ask you for a favour? Security : Sure. Let me know if there’s anything I can do for you. Mrs. Mimin : Take care of my luggage for a moment, please. I’m going to report my arrival. Security : Okay, I’ll do that for you. Mrs. Mimin : Thank you so much.

  9. LET’S WORK TOGETHER! Make a dialogue on asking or giving favours based on the situations given in the role cards. Practice it with your friend, and then perform it in front of the class. Pair work • A man is driving home from work in the rain. He sees a student walking home for school without umbrella. The man then offers the student to join him in his car. What do they say? • A mother is sick. She asks her son to buy medicines in a drugstore. What do they say? • A girl is going to mail a package to the post office. Her mother asks her to mail her letter too. What do they say? • You are at a railway station. You see an old lady carrying so many luggage. You are going to help her. What would you and the old lady say? • Your neighbour’s cat is gone up the tree, and it cannot go down again. You offer a hand to get your neighbour’s cat down. What do you and your neighbour say?

  10. IT’S YOUR TURN! • DIRECTION After listen to the dialogue spoken by the speaker, choose the 5 words which complete each sentence.
