  1. Sunil Sharif Roll # 2017-047 Class: BSN-1 Topic: Benefits Of Intranet In Nursing

  2. Objectives • What is intranet? • History of intranet • Uses of intranet • Intranet software • Benefits of intranet in nursing • Conclusion • References

  3. Intranet • An intranet is a computer network that uses Internet Protocol technology to share information, operational systems, or computing services within an organization. • Well known Internet protocols may be found in an intranet, such as HTTP (web services), SMTP (e-mail), and FTP (file transfer protocol).

  4. History • Not long ago, businessesand organizations were facing tough challenges in inter-company and intra-company communications due to the complexity and tremendous cost of information sharing. • 1970s, the construction of experimental networks such as ARPANET brought the idea of information sharing between computers followed by the development of Telnet and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) which enabled users to connect to another system to send and receive data.

  5. Continue… • Information sharing was not widely available until Personal Computers (PCs) became available in the 1980s (National Research Council Staff, 1999). • Information sharing formed into a new shape in July 1992, with the introduction of a new Internet protocol, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). • It was designed to improve the efficiency of document retrieval.

  6. Continue… • During the internet evolution, organizations realized the power and potential to apply the same technology, but this time with an intra-organizational focus to overcome similar problems associated with intra-organizational connectivity. • By utilizing intranet systems, organizations have the ability to collaborate and share information across various platforms.

  7. Intranet software • Microsoft SharePoint is the dominant software used for creating intranets. Estimates indicate that around 50% of all intranets are developed using Share-Point, however there are many alternatives.

  8. Uses • Intranets are being used to deliver tools, e.g. collaboration(to facilitate working in groups and teleconferencing) , sales and customer relationship management tools, project management etc., to advance productivity. • Intranets are also being used as corporate culture-change platforms. For example, large numbers of employees discussing key issues in an intranet forum application could lead to new ideas in management, productivity, quality, and other corporate issues.

  9. Continue… • Larger businesses allow users within their intranet to access public internet through firewall servers. They have the ability to screen messages coming and going keeping security intact.

  10. Benefits of intranet in nursing • Reduces Cost • Saves Time  • Increases Collaboration  • Increases Productivity and Effectiveness  • Integrated and Distributed Computing Environment

  11. Continue.. • Rich in Format • Improves communication • Can capture and share knowledge • Connectivity with other systems • Easy to learn and use

  12. In my opinion • Intranet is one of the most empowering and cost-effective technologies and have the potential to change the way people work, learn, and process information. • Intranet saves time , increases collaboration, increases productivity and effectiveness so it is of great importance.

  13. Conclusion • In addition there are non-quantifiable benefits the intranet provides. For example cross-fertilization, idea triggers (shared ideas combined with others, generation of What-if scenarios), controlled information a accessibility (logical management, control what’s available, defined and agreed location routes), and information is always available.
