  2. Everyday Use! • “Synthesis” may be a new word, but it isn’t new to you! • Have you ever asked your friends about a movie you hadn’t seen, to determine if it’s worth seeing? • Have you ever asked your classmates about a class, to figure out if you should take it?

  3. Yes! • Both scenarios require: • Gathering information • Analyzing information to determine if there are patterns, commonalities, differences • Using that analysis to make a decision or create a theory about a topic

  4. So… • Synthesis is a marriage of these types of writing: • Research • Analysis • Compare/Contrast

  5. The GOAL • These texts are very different in nature. You must acknowledge how different they are, and yet seek “harmony” between them. What does each, in its unique way, have to say about your Essential Question?

  6. ORGANIZATION • Synthesis writing requires you to organize by topic, rather than source. • Problem and solution • Compare and contrast (similarities and differences) • Climactic order (most memorable ideas and texts saved for last)
