It was a dark night but there was a soft glow from the moon, hidden secretly behind the clouds. There were people walking up and down the street, standing in the doorways, loitering on the corners, chatting quietly in the bars - but it all passed me by. A dog barked at me. I could see the hairs stand up on the back of his neck and as he bared his teeth, the smell of his breath filled my nostrils. I felt queasy and I could taste the fear in my mouth. I was frightened. I felt like a rabbit caught in headlights. The orange glow of the streetlamps was an infrared heater bearing down on me. I started to run, my heart thumping in my chest. Tears streamed down my face until my vision was so blurred the pavement in front of me became a sea of grey. Where was I? Where had they gone? How could they leave me alone in this busy bustling wilderness?
