Definitions • Russian Population before the 1860s: • 90%+ = serfs • 10% Aristocracy/Nobility, Clergy (Russian Orthodox) • No industrial proletariat, no real bourgeoisie • Russian population 1860s-1920s: • Emancipated serfs = peasants, farmers • Rise of Political parties --- including Communists • Aristocracy/Nobility, Clergy (Russian Orthodox) still exist • Czar deposed by Kerensky & Provisional Government in Feb. 1917 • Military • No industrial proletariat, no real bourgeoisie • USSR population under Lenin: • Communist party (all others banned) • Aristocrats/Nobles & Clergy flee or go into hiding • Czar = executed • Military • NEP – Peasant capitalism • Kulaks • Attempt to create an industrial sector • USSR Population under Stalin: • All opposition banned (Totalitarianism) • Military • Ethnic minorities in SSRs • Jews  Chinese Siberian border • Creation of large scale Industrial class • De-kulakization • Majority of pop = Agricultural • Collective farmers
