  1. Tides Created by Ms. Spera

  2. Waves 1. Height = High point to Low point 2. Wave length = crest to crest or trough to trough H E I G H T

  3. Tides: The daily rise and fall of ocean waters Caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. a. the moons pull is 2x’s greater b. The time of tides changes by about 50 minutes each day. Why? Moon rises 50 minutes later each day due to the moons revolution around Earth.

  4. Spring Tides Spring tides are caused by the moon being in the full or new moon phase. Therefore, we get spring tides twice a month *What phase do you see on this slide? New moon = sun and moon in line

  5. Spring Tides *What phase do you see on this slide? Full Moon 3. Because the sun and moon pull together, you get the highest high tides and the lowest low tides during spring tide.

  6. Neap Tides 1. Neap tides are cause when the moon is in the firstor lastquarter phase. Why? *The Sun’s and the moon’s pull are opposing * What phase is illustrated on this slide? First Quarter

  7. Neap tide continued * What phase is illustrated on this page? Last quarter

  8. Analysis • Explain how the moon causes tides. • Why do tides rise or fall every 6 hours 12.5 minutes? • Why are tides 50 minutes later each day? • How does the sun effect tides? Explain • What is the difference between a spring tide and a neap tide? explain
