NWCCU Year Three Self Evaluation Workshop : Standards 2E & 2G Donna Reed, Ph.D. Portland Community College Library Director March 13, 2012
About this presentation • Provide insights and perspectives about the standards • Provoke discussion here and at the subsequent breakout sessions • Collaborative sharing experience
Introduction • Library Director, Portland Community College • Comprehensive community college • 3 campuses, 8 centers and many other instructional locations • Portland metropolitan region – district covers 5 counties • 2010-11 fte 32,694
Confessions • Not an expert • One site visit under current standards • Currently working on PCC’s year 3 – with a highly talented team • I am a Hemingway to a fault • I have a background in information design • Have been on many grants & scholarships committees
Food for thought • We’re all in this together • Writing style is more concise than previous process - call on your Hemingways to help with style – but rely on the Prousts for detail • Think of the visiting team as a team of grant reviewers “After Proust there are certain things that simply cannot be done again.” Francoise Sagan “I think that Hemingway made real discoveries about the use of language in his first novel, … I admired the way he made drunk people talk.” Evelyn Waugh
Approaching 2.E • Determine library’s value to institution • Tie library’s role to stated initiatives • Support instruction • Support student success • Assess, refine, improve
Approaching 2.E • October, 2011 • 9 Principles • Institutional effectiveness • Professional values • Educational role • Discovery • Collections • Space • Management / Administration • Personnel • External relations
Section 2 E • 2.E.1 - the stuff – appropriate level of currency, accuracy, depth, breadth • 2.E.2 – planning is guided by data including feedback • 2.E.3 – instruction • 2.E.4 - quality, security, use, collaborative arrangements * …whenever offered, however delivered
Two other library-related standards • 2.A.13 Policies regarding access to and use of library and information resources—regardless of format, location, and delivery method—are documented, published, and enforced. • 2.C.6 Faculty with teaching responsibilities, in partnership with library and information resources personnel, ensure that the use of library and information resources is integrated into the learning process.
2G Physical & Technological Infrastructure • 2.G.1 – facilities – safe, secure, accessible, sufficient • 2.G.2- policies and procedures around hazardous materials • 2.G.3 – master plan for long-range physical development
Technological infrastructure • 2.G.5 – appropriate and adequate technology systems • 2.G.6 – instruction and support for students, faculty, staff • 2.G.7 – opportunities for input • 2.G.8 – technology update and replacement plan
