Bridge Vocabulary. Abutment: supports at the end of a bridge that carry the load and keep the ends from spreading out. Spandrel: vertical supports of a bridge used to distribute the weight of the roadway to the arch below. Span: The distance between two bridge supports.

  2. Abutment: supports at the end of a bridge that carry the load and keep the ends from spreading out

  3. Spandrel: vertical supports of a bridge used to distribute the weight of the roadway to the arch below

  4. Span: The distance between two bridge supports

  5. Truss: supporting lattice work added to create tall beams that add rigidity to an existing beam

  6. Piers: an intermediate support for the adjacent ends of two bridge spans

  7. Tower: a tall pier or frame supporting the cable of a suspension bridge

  8. Beams: a horizontal structure supporting vertical loads by resisting bending

  9. Hands-On Exploration • Use toothpicks to experiment with possible designs. • Use the Play-Doh to hold the toothpicks in place.
