  3. Cosmetology Program • YOU ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN A CAREER IN A VERY EXCITING FIELD. HOW WELL YOU DO WILL DEPEND ON YOUR WILLINGNESS TO WORK HARD, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, PRACTICE YOUR SKILLS, STUDY, AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARD YOUR WORK AND YOUR CLASSMATES

  4. Expectations • Cosmetology is a 2 year program that will prepare you not only to provide services in a beauty salon, we will also provide you with the necessary skills to become more employable, better citizens and students through our student organization. Skills USA.

  8. Theory Cont. • Text: Milady Standard Textbook of Cosmetology • Theory and Practical Workbooks • Supplemental materials; Video tapes, Milady CD Rom, Flash cards, Cengage Online testing • Class sessions are 2 hours and 20 min.

  9. Theory Cont. • During theory a variety of methods are implemented to reinforce the terminology, techniques, methods and purpose of the knowledge. Rubrics, mapping, foreshadowing and outline form are used during lecture. All students are required to create flash cards for all terminology words. As chapters evolve, the terminology is enlarged. Terminology drills are held to review every lesson prior to beginning the new lesson. The students enjoy treats for correct answers.

Theory Cont. • All students must pass with minimum 85%. • Students look up missed questions in text. • Students take another version of test to reevaluate level of retention. • Scantrons forms are used and after every test we obtain a report on the number of missed questions. • I use the spiraling technique. Questions from previous tests appear again and again as the year progresses. • Multiple choice questions format is predominately used to parallel state board methods. • Computer testing will also be implemented. • No student is exempt from mid-terms or finals.

  11. Competencies20% • All hands on skills are considered competencies. The Virginia department of education and the state board of cosmetology require certain skills be mastered to receive a certificate of completion. • These skill areas include all aspects of hair, nails and skin care.

  13. Our Salon: • I run my classroom as if it were my salon. My expectations and my standards, are high. I will ask nothing of any of you that I don’t or won’t do myself.

  16. Attendance • Four absences per 9 weeks/ 12 for the semester • Excused absences • Tardy/Early dismissal • Homebound instruction

  17. Completion Requirements • It is my expectation that each and everyone of you are here with the intent to complete our two year program and pass the state board exam.

  19. Required fees • Each student will be responsible for payment of the following: • Kit & Workbooks $243.00 • Club fees 16.00 • Total $259.00

  20. Payment • Total amount is due August 29th. Certified checks, cash, money orders are accepted. No personal checks. • Make CC & MO out to New horizons REC
