  1. Integrating information towards Digital ATM SESAR SWIM Demonstrations Presented By: Wim Post SESAR JU Date: August 28, 2013

  2. Presentation Topics

  3. DEFINITION SWIM is neither just infrastructure, nor just a set of services, but rather everything for putting in place information and service lifecycle management • SWIM consists of standards, infrastructure and governance enabling the management of ATM information and its exchange between qualified parties via interoperable services. SWIM Governance Standards Qualified parties Qualified party Qualified parties ATM information ATM information Standards Service consumer(s) Service(s) Standards SWIM Infrastructure Standards Network infrastructure

  4. SWIM is about interoperability Organisation A Organisation B Organisational Alignment Real World System Real World System Logical Process Alignment Semantic Alignment Syntax (XML,…) Information System Information System Technical Interaction (SOAP,REST, OGC…) Transport (HTTP, TCP/IP,…)

  8. SESAR Demonstrations • SWIM Demonstration 2011 • Using simple client applications (SWIM enabled applications) to demonstrate some SWIM Technical Infrastructure potential/capabilities for supporting operational/business needs. • From pioneers SWIM to short/medium/long term SWIM components • 4 scenarios Registry at design time – potential short/medium term usage NOP B2B Web Service experience – real application in operation today Volcanic Ash – potential short term usage Airspace closure – medium/long term

  9. SESAR Demonstrations • SWIM Demonstration 2012 &World ATM Congress February 2013, Madrid • Scenario • Services • Set-up

  12. Set-up (and video!) • http://youtu.be/5vObhAjoUgo

  13. SESAR SWIM Master Class 2012 • The idea: • Provide access to some NM information services • NOP Route generation • NOP flight plan filing / validation • Airspace data access (in AIXM 5.1) • Access Airspace Use Plans • Invite interested parties to take 3 months to explore and make proposals for using these services. • No predefined operational scenario to follow.

  14. SESAR SWIM Master Class 2012 • 40+ teams registered • 19 proposals received • Some in the form of working prototypes • 3 awarded as Best-in-Class http://www.sesarju.eu/news-press/news/swim-master-class-and-best-class-is%E2%80%A6-1149

  15. SESAR Demonstrations • SESAR Demonstration activities aim at: • showing the benefits of SESAR solutions in an operational environment to the wider aviation community; • capitalising on the SESAR delivery approach by going beyond the SESAR validation activities and • accelerating the operational acceptance and the subsequent deployment of SESAR solutions.

  16. SESAR Demonstration: ICATS • Context • 2008/2010 AIRE projects demonstrating quick wins. • 2012 Call for demonstrating New SESAR Solutions • 18 contracts awarded, 20 airlines, 18 ANSPs, 6 Airports, 20 supply industry. • 3 projects with NextGen cooperation • Interoperability Cross-Atlantic TrialS (ICATS)

  17. SESAR Demonstration: ICATS • 20 eastbound and 20 westbound flights between NY / Caribbean and Madrid. • Use of FIXM based flight object exchange in shadow mode, connecting SESAR and FAA SWIM, for early and more frequent information on Atlantic flight progress • Trials in Q1/Q2 2014

  18. SESAR SWIM Master Class 2013 • Similar to 2012 but: • Multiple providers of services • Many different service types • Registry in use by all participants for • Service publication and discovery • Publication of standards and reference material • Service lifecycle management • Expecting more prototype implementations • Some 100 interested parties • Still running till November 2013

  19. Participants

  20. SWIM Demonstration 2014 • Programme internal • Scope still under discussion • Q2 2014 • Contribution from MOSIA consortium with OGC and several of its members contributing also to the Aviation Domain Working Group and the OGC Aviation test beds

  21. Future global demonstration(s) • Exploit strengths of Master Class approach • Open to parties around the globe • Promote SWIM compliant infrastructure [prototype] deployment (multiple profiles) • Extend use of Registry • Publish latest reference material for service development and information models • Run global demonstration exercises around relevant operational scenarios
