  1. Astronomy • Astronomy is the study of space. • Why is astronomy important? • Provides understanding of our planet. • Has resulted in vastly improved technology such as in computers. • Has also given us teflon and velcro.

  2. The universe • Consists mostly of galaxies and dark matter. • Galaxies are large groups of stars. • Dark matter is material that fills the space between galaxies, but does not emit light.

  3. Large distances • Miles or kilometers are far too small. • 1 AU or astronomical unit is distance from Sun to Earth, 150 million kilometers. • I light year is distance that light travels in a year, 9.5 x 1012 km • 1 parsec is 3.26 light years.

  5. Electromagnetic spectrum • Radio waves—used in communications • Microwaves—cooking and communications • Infrared—heat radiation • Visible—what we see, ROY G BIV • Ultraviolet—skin cancer, tanning • X-ray—looking inside body • Gamma Ray—radioactive decay

  6. Telescopes • Visible—reflecting and refracting • Cherenkov—detect gamma rays • Also have telescopes that detect microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, radio • Space telescopes: Hubble, Chandra x-ray, Compton gamma ray, Spitzer infrared.

  7. Earth motions • Rotates on axis creating days • Revolves around Sun creating years • Orbit is ellipse not circle • Perihelion closest to Sun • Aphelion furthest from Sun • Evidence of rotation and revolution—moving constellations

  9. Calendars • Julius and Augustus Caesar created modern calendar with leap year in February every four years. • Pope Gregory XIII created Gregorian calendar in 1500’s which eliminated leap years at even century years unless divisible by 400.

  10. Seasons • Caused by tilt of Earth, not distance from Sun. • Vernal and Autumnal equinoxes, meaning equal night. Day and night of equal length • Summer and Winter solstices. Longest and shortest day of year.
