Project objectives - Discuss the concept and history of file compression . - How to compress and extract folders and files using the features that are built into Windows 7 . - How to create a new compressed file . - How to remove / delete items from compressed files . - Discuss the origin and uses of the “zip”, “rar”, “cab”, and “iso” filename extension.

  3. Data compression - Data compression is particularly useful in communications because it enables devices to transmit or store the same amount of data in fewer bits.

  4. compress and extract folders and files - Compressed files take up less storage space and can be transferred to other computers more quickly than uncompressed files. You can work with compressed files and folders in the same way that you work with uncompressed files and folders.

  5. To compress file and folder Step 1: - Locate the folders or files you want to compress.

  6. Step 2 : - Right click on the folder or it could also be file, select send to from menu and then click on Compressed (zipped) folder.

  7. Step 3 : - Now you can see the compressed (zipped) files or folders with the extension of (.zip) as shown in below snapshot.

  8. To extract file and folder Step 1: - To extract the entire content of zip file, right click on zipped folder and select extract all and follow the steps.

  9. Step 2 : - Select the location where you want to uncompress the zip file in my case its C:\ drive and press extract button.

  10. Step 3: - The zip file has been successfully unzip or uncompressed in C:\ drive.

  11. Create a new compressed file - Step 1 : Right-click a file or folder of files.

  12. - Step 2 : Select “Send to” from the pop-up menu

  13. - Step 3 : Then select “Compressed (zipped) folder” from the additional pop-up menu .

  14. - Step 4 : The result is a new Zip archive file with the same name as the original file or folder, but with the “zip” file extension appended to the name.

  15. Remove - delete items from compressed files 1- Open the Zip file . 2- Click delete on the files that you want to remove it. 3- Click Yes to confirm that .

  16. Origin and uses compressing files - Zip - Rar - Cab - Iso

  17. ZIP file : is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression , ZIP file may contain one or more files or folders that may have been compressed.

  18. - RAR file: is a proprietary, archive file format that supports data compression, error recovery and file spanning.

  19. - CAB file : is an archive file format for Microsoft Windows that supports lossless data compression and embedded digital certificates used for maintaining archive integrity.

  20. - ISO file : is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations.
