  5. Banking In India During East India Company there were three Presidency banks • Bank of Bengal • Bank of Bombay • Bank of Madras In 1921 ,these three banks merged and Imperial bank of India came into existence.

  6. RBI • In 1934, The Reserve Bank of India was set up on the basis of the recommendations of the Hilton Young Commission. • Also known as royal commission on Indian Currency and Finance

  8. Mohur • The original choice for the seal of RBI was The East India Company Double Mohur, with the sketch of the Lion and Palm Tree • It was decided to replace the lion with the tiger, the national animal of India.

  9. Governor • The first governor of RBI was Sir Osborne Smith • The first Indian governor was CD Deshmukh • Manmohan Singh is the only Prime Minister who also was a Governor of RBI. • Current Governor is RaghuramRajan.

  10. Headquarter & Offices • At first RBI’s main office was located in Kolkata. • It was moved to Mumbai. • It has four zonal offices and about 22 regional offices. • It also runs two training colleges-Reserve Bank Staff College at Chennai and College of Agricultural Banking at Pune.

  11. Functions of RBI • It is solely responsible for creating notes of all domination. • It acts as a central bank for the other commercial banks. • It also helps in interbank fund transfer. It is the main monetary authority of India. • It regulates the credit and currency system in India. • It maintains public confidence in the banks, protects depositors interest and provides cost-effective banking services to the public.
