Machinery Directive 98/37/EC • New Approach Directive laying down E.R. to avoid or reduce any risk to health and safety of operators and other exposed persons • Risks to be considered for normal and abnormal (foreseeable) use : mechanical hazard, radiation, high temperature, fire, electricity, noise, vibrations, emissions of gases or dust, etc. • Machinery put on the EEA market or put into service

Machinery Directive 98/37/EC Scope (I) Assembly of linked parts or components, at least one of which moves, joined together for a specific application Machinery can only be marked with CE if : • it is ready for use by the end user • it can function independently without the help of any other machinery or component in order to fulfil its function, apart from the supply of energy

  3. Machinery Directive 98/37/EC Scope (II) Applies to two families of products : • Machinery and similar equipment (assembly of machines or complex installation, interchangeable equipment) • safety components

Machinery Directive 98/37/EC Interrelations with EMC and LVD Risks mainly of electrical originexclusively covered by Low voltage Directive 73/23/EEC e.g. : video recorder, copier, hair dryer Risks mainly of non electrical origin MD e.g. : washing machine Electrical products under scope of MD or LVD also fall under scope of Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 89/336/EEC amended
