  2. Averse • Opposed, disinclined, or loath • People are commonly observed to be “risk averse” in everyday life – that is, they reject better-than-fair gambles

  3. Odious • Highly offensive; repugnant; disgusting • The odious images of genocide through history were enough to make the students want to find a way to take action against any further crimes.

  4. Transient • Lasting only a short time; existing briefly; temporary • While it feels like an entire lifetime, school is really only a transient part of most people’s lives . . . Not J. Present’s, but most peoples.

  5. Endeavor • To attempt or try • He endeavors to keep things neat and orderly in his room for easy access to all of the tools necessary for success.

  6. Ardent • Intensely devoted, eager, or enthusiastic; zealous • The students were ardent supporters of their team on homecoming night.

  7. Derive • To reach or obtain by reasoning; deduce; infer • If we are lucky, we may derive one great benefit from this horrible experience

  8. Countenance • Appearance, especially the look or expression of the face; visage • Realizing that the school year was almost half over, a sad countenance came over the faces of the students.

  9. Benevolent • Desiring to help others; charitable; kindhearted • The parents practiced a form of benevolent neglect, and I was always encouraged to go out and play rather than stay inside and expect to be entertained.

  10. Abode • A place in which a person resides; residence; dwelling; home • The family welcomed the homeless man into their abode on a cold night.

  11. Rankle • To irritate or cause keen irritation or bitter resentment. • The harsh comments on the student’s paper rankled him for days.

  12. Interment • To bury; inter; entomb • Following the battle the mass interment was efficient and respectful if not typically ceremonial.
