  3. ’Sup? Aw… the difficulties of learning English There is a two letter word that perhaps has more meaning than any other two letter word- it's UP. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we waken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special, and this is confusing. A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP. To be knowledgeable of the proper uses of UP, look UP the word in the dictionary. In a desk size dictionary, UP takes UP almost 1/4th the page and definitions add UP to about thirty. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When it doesn't rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, and as some would say--quite rudely--it is time to shut UP. 4. Methodologies • SIOP • Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol • research-based observation instrument • used to measure sheltered instruction • GANAG • created by Jane E. Pollock • acronym for designing a lesson plan • Goal • Access prior knowledge • New Information • Apply • Goal review • Many other methods, goal being 2-fold for English Learners… • student access to grade-level curriculum • improve student’s language proficiency

  5. Activity A missing vowel, revisited

  6. Set Content Objectives • By the end of this activity, you will… • tell about your best birthday ever!

  7. Set Language Objective(s) • By the end of this activity, you will… • speak using social language, & • write and read some academic/topic specific language

  8. Appropriate Content Concepts • This is in teacher selection of topic • Age appropriate (not asking you to be a kid, example: not asking you to participate in nursery rhyme)

  9. Authentic Activity • this activity is meaningful in that it is something a person might do outside of a classroom • the something that you might do outside of a classroom: tell someone about a good experience

  10. Activity • again, to simulate being an English Learner (someone who has limited English Proficiency), you cannot use the letter ‘e’

  11. Directions • begin by drawing/sketching picture(s) of your birthday experience • write down at least 5 important words/phrases (preparing you to meet the language objective of speaking and using social language)

  12. Supplementary Materials • as if you had access to bilingual support staff or a bilingual dictionary, • write down up to 3 words with the letter “e” • selecting key words that really help you address the content objective of telling about your birthday experience (addressing the language objective of topic specific language) • use resources • use technology that you may have, ex: picture from internet, picture from social media site • video clip from phone (example: YouTube video of the Happy Birthday song • use markers/crayons, paper, glue to help you create visual aides to address the content objective (ex: make confetti or a card)

  13. Adaptation of Content • you do not need to use full sentences (focus on content, working to build language, understanding that existing grasp of English is limited)

  14. Activity • tell your partner about your best birthday ever! • Use drawing/sketch • Read words/phrases your wrote • Use visual aide and multimedia supports • Do not need complete sentences • Smile 
