  2. World War II Info • World War II took place from 1939-1945 • The Second Sino-Japanese War and the German invasion of Poland split almost all the world into two opposing military factions. • The two factions were the Allied and Axis Powers

  3. The major Allied powers were The United States, Canada, The Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom. The major Axis powers were Germany, Italy, and Japan. World War II was the largest in all history. Over 100 million military personnel were mobilized for this conflict. World War II took the lives of 60 million people, many of them were civilians. This makes World War II the most deadly conflict in the human era. It also was the most expensive war yet running up a cost of 1 trillion dollars. More Background Info

The Pacific Theatre • On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, this launched the U.S. into World War II. • The turning point in the Pacific theatre was the naval battle of Midway. • This battle decided which force had control of the Central Pacific Ocean. • The battle was won by the United States and shifted the tide of war in their favor.

  5. Propaganda • Propaganda was used during World War II to keep news positive and keep views of the war positive as well. • The government used posters, stamps, and movies to display and spread propaganda.

  6. Music • Music in the 1940’s was all about the big band style of music and groovy jazz. • Artists like Artie Shaw, Count Basie, and Rosemary Clooney very popular and helped to define the musical era. • There was also the era of World War II music, this brand of music reflected the pain of their country while staying upbeat and positive.

  7. Books and Authors • The top book of the year in 1942 was The Song of Bernadette by Franz Werfel. • The top book in 1941 was The Keys of the Kingdom by A.J. Cronin. • The most popular book in 1943 was The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas.

  8. Actors and Movies • A very famous actor from the 1940’s is Ingrid Bergman for her role in the 1942 film Casablanca. • Some of the top movies of the time were Bambi, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Song of the South, Mam and Dad, and Samson and Delilah.

Important Inventions • In 1942 a German named Wernher von Braun invented the guided missile. • Also in 1942 an American by the name of Enrico Fermi invented the nuclear reactor. • In 1945 U.S. government scientists invented the Atomic Bomb. • In 1947 an American named Percy L. Spencer invented the microwave.

Fashion • Young mens fashion during the 1940’s was a lot of suits colorful ties. • However some suits such as the Zoot suits were banned from further production because they were deemed as wasteful. • When young men weren’t in a uniform or a suit which was very rare they wore a collared shirt or polo with trousers.

  11. Political Leaders • Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the thirty second president of the United States during a time of country wide and world wide crisis. He was elected to four terms in office. He died while in office in 1945. • Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister and main leader of England during World War II (1940-1945,1951-1955). He was an artist, a writer, an officer in the army, and a leader.

  12. Other Political Leaders • Adolf Hitler was an Austrian born German politician who was the leader of Germany from 1933-1945. He and his wife both committed suicide. • Benito Mussolini was the dictator of Italy from 1922-1943 before being killed by his own countrymen along with his wife. • Hideki Tōjō was a general in the Japanese Army and was the 40th Prime Minister of Japan. He was executed in 1948 for war crimes.

Events Referred To • The Tunisian campaign was the campaign for the liberation of Northern Africa referred to as “Leper’s liberation” • The stand at Stalingrad was referred to as “Leper’s stand at Stalingrad” it was the bloodiest battle in history with over 2 million casualties and a huge victory for the Russian and Allied forces.

  14. New Hampshire • New Hampshire is a small state in the northeastern part of the United States called New England. • It was one of the original 13 colonies. • It was the first state to have its own state constitution.

  15. Preparatory Schools • A preparatory school is a private secondary school in North America that charges higher fees and that is designed to prepare students for universities and colleges.
