  2. January • Manila captured, siege of Bataan begins. • Japanese invade the Dutch East Indies • British withdraw onto Singapore

  3. February • Singapore suurrenders • 5,000 KIA/WIA • 80,000 POW • Banka Island Massacre • Battle of the Java Sea, Japanese victory • Allies lose 6 destroyers, 5 cruisers

  4. March • US troops land in New Caledonia. • US forces around Manila Bay retreat to Corregidor • Douglas MacArthur arrives in Australia

  5. April • 24,000 troops on Bataan • Japanese land in New Guinea • 9 APR: Bataan falls • Bataan Death March • 60,000 – 80,000 US & Filipino POWs • Marched 80 miles • 2,600 – 16,000 die • 18 APR: Doolittle Raid

  6. May • Battle of the Coral Sea • 6 May: Corregidor surrenders • 12,000 US prisoners • GEN Houma fired for being too slow. • 27 May: Yorktown reaches Pearl Harbor • Leaves 2 days later
