  2. Agenda • VMsafe • ESXi (formerly 3i) • Software Lifecycle Management • VMware Lab Manager • VMware Stage Manager • VMware Lifecycle Manager • VMware Site Recovery Manager • Other Beta Programs • VI3.5 Performance Enhancements • MSCS • Maintenance Releases vs Updates

  3. VMsafe • What is VMware VMsafe?? • Leverages properties of VMware Infrastructure (VI) to protect machines in ways previously not possible with physical machines. • Provides new security for virtualized environments and an application program interface (API)-sharing program to enable partners to develop VMware-aware security products. • VMsafe Security API is an open approach that gives security vendors the insight to leverage the inherent properties of virtualization in their security offerings. • While physical security solutions attempt to protect through layered defenses using network and host protection, VMsafe enables a new layer of defense enveloping the VM and protecting it from network, host, and application threats simultaneously.

  4. VMsafe • Memory and CPU - VMsafe provides introspection of virtual machine memory pages and CPU states. • Networking - VMsafe enables filtering of network packets inside hypervisors, as well as within the security of the virtual machine itself. • Process execution - VMsafe provided in-guest, in-process APIs that enable complete monitoring and control of process execution. • Storage - Guest virtual machine disk files can be mounted, manipulated and modified as they persist on storage devices.

  5. ESXi 3.5 Compact, 32MB footprint Only architecture with no reliance on a general purpose OS Integration in hardware eliminates installation Intuitive wizard driven start up experience dramatically reduces deployment time Standards-based management of the underlying hardware • Server boot to running virtual machines in minutes • Simplified management • Increased security and reliability

  8. ESXi 3.5 announcements • VMware ESX Server 3i becomes VMware ESXi 3.5 • Dell, Fujitsu, HP, IBM and Super Micro announced plans to embed VMware • ESX Server 3i across broad lines of servers to accelerate the proliferation of virtualization. • · Dell announced plans to ship 3i embedded in ALL Dell servers with the first models shipping • in April, including the Dell 2950 III, R900, and M-Series blades. • · Fujitsu announced immediate general availability of two server models – RX300 and RX330. • · HP announced the VMware ESX Server 3i Option Kit for ten different HP Server models in • their BladeSystem and ProLiant server lines (GA in early April). • · HP announced that they will be creating an integrated image of ESX Server 3i that • incorporates HP Common Information Model (CIM) providers. This enables customers to • manage HP hardware with System Insight Manager through an agent-less management • protocol. • · IBM announced new models of servers including their new IBM BladeCenter and HS21 XM blade.

  9. VMware Lab Manager VMware Stage Manager Self-service Provisioning and Image Library Management for transiently configured infra-structure in Development, QA, Support, Training, Demos, etc. Automation and Management ofPre-production Infrastructure andOperations in IT Service Delivery VMware Solutions for IT Service Delivery Application Development Application/Service Transition : development QA integrate (dev) test stage-UAT manage Lab Manager and Stage Manager are complementary management and automation solutions for VMware Infrastructure.

  10. VMware Lab Manager • VMware Lab Manager addresses the needs of development and QA engineers and the IT teams that support them by providing fast and simple self-service provisioning of multi-tier virtual machine based environments while enabling IT control over policies. • Lab Manager 3.0 Beta • Tighter integration with Virtual Center • Vmotion, DRS (resource pools), HA, etc…. • More detailed access rules and permissions granularity • Multiple Networks • BEA LiquidVM

  11. VMware Stage Manager • VMware Stage Manager addresses the needs of the IT and application administrators responsible for rolling new and updated IT services into production, enabling streamlined and accelerated transition of applications through the pre-production stages – including integration, testing, staging, user acceptance testing – and into production.

  12. Stage Manager Solves Service Transition • Manage pre-production infrastructure assets • Build up a pre-production image of complex production environments • Move complex system changes through development, testing, staging and user acceptance phases before committing systems into production • Accelerate and enforce change, config, and release management processes • Define stages for each service • Manage & Track stage Transitions, • Visualize entire service delivery lifecycle • UI provides unified view of all services, stages, and related resources

  13. VMware Lifecycle Manager • VMware Lifecycle Manager addresses the needs of infrastructure administrators, and allows companies to implement a consistent and automated process for requesting, approving, deploying, updating, and retiring virtual machines.

  14. Lifecycle Manager Workflow VM Tracking Request for VM Provisioning Policy & Control Route for Approval Automated Deployment Intelligent Placement Archive Delete Decommission 14

  15. VMware Site Recovery Manager • VMware Site Recovery Manager which can make disaster recovery more rapid, reliable, and manageable. VMware Site Recovery Manager delivers centralized management of recovery plans, automates the recovery process, and enables dramatically better testing of recovery plans.

  16. Simplifies and automates disaster recovery workflows: Setup, testing, failover, failback Provides central management of recovery plans from VirtualCenter Turns manual recovery processes into automated recovery plans Simplifies integration with 3rd-party storage replication VMware Site Recovery Manager Site Recovery Manager leverages VMware Infrastructure to transform disaster recovery • Makes disaster recovery rapid, reliable, manageable, affordable

  17. VI3.5 Performance Enhancements • Scalability • 512GB RAM per host • 64GB RAM per VM • 64 logical CPUs per host • Networking • Jumbo Frames • TCP Segment Offload • 10 GigE • Memory • Large memory pages • Storage • Infiniband • http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vi3_performance_enhancements_wp.pdf

  18. Other Beta Programs • Workstation 6.5 • Converter Integration • Player 2.5 • ACE 2.5 • VI Toolkit for Windows • Provides a powerful yet simple command line interface for task based management of the VMware Infrastructure platform. Windows Administrators can easily manage and deploy the VMware Infrastructure with a familiar, simple to use command line interface.

  19. ESX Server 3.5 support of MSCS • VMware is planning to support a limited amount of hardware platforms in ESX Server 3.5 Update 1 with MSCS, but we'll be open for partner certification in the ESX Server 3.5 Update 2 timeframe.

  20. Maintenance releases vs. Updates • Prior to the ESX Server 3.5 line, we provided Maintenance (x.y.z) releases every 4-6 months.  These releases include security and bug fixes (rolled up from the previous 4-6 months of monthly patches) and new hardware and guest OS support. • With the ESX Server 3.5 line we are changing the terminology slightly to Updates(i.e., ESX Server 3.5 Update 1, ESX Server 3.5 Update 2, etc.) with the primary change being the frequency.  We are targeting instead 3-4 month intervals to stay closer to hardware and OS releases.  Updates also include feature enhancements in a continual effort to further polish the product - minor adjustments to the newer features once they have gone into the field and completion of testing on features that were enabled in the major/minor release, but not fully tested in time for the release.
