Social Enterprise in the UK –state of play • c. 70,000 social enterprises in the UK (5% of all businesses) • Contributing c.£25 billion to the UK economy and employing over 1 million people. • Operate in almost every sector: from health and social care, to renewable energy, transport, retail and housing • There are many routes to social enterprise including: • spinning out of parts of the public sector • entrepreneur-led organisations • charities becoming more business-orientated

Why does it matter - the evidence • 50% reported profit; 26% broke even • 52% grew turnover in past 12 months • Start-ups: 49% set up in last 5 years • 41% grew workforce in last year • 14% export • 59% introduced new product/service • 31% in top 20% most deprived communities • 59% actively employ people disadvantaged from labour market; for 16%, this is more than 50% workforce • 40% led by women; 31% BAME Director, 40% Director with disability • Average pay ratio 3.6:1 • 73% involve beneficiaries in decision-making SOCIAL VALUE
