  2. Friday, Feb 21 Chapter 10.3 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms

  3. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Objective: To find the surface area of rectangular prisms.

  4. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms At the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following question. What is the relationship between area and surface area?

  5. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms The surface area (SA) of a three dimensional figure is the outer face or exterior boundary of the figure.

  6. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms There are two ways to find the surface area of a shape. 1. Use a formula 2. Use a net

  7. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms The formula to find the surface area (SA) of a prism is 2 x Area of the Base + tall x perimeter of the Base, or SA = 2B + tp

  8. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms B and b are two different measurements. In a three –dimensional shape the Base (B) is area of the bottom and top of the shape and determines the name of the prism.

  9. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Area of the Base (B) = lw Perimeter (p) = w + l + w + l tall (t) = The distance from Base to Base.

  10. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2B + tp To find the SA of a prism. Step 1 – Find the area of the Base. What is the area of the Base?

  11. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(35) + tp To find the SA of a prism. Step 1 – Find the area of the Base. What is the area of the Base? 5 x 7 = 35

  12. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(35) + tp To find the SA of a prism. Step 2 – Find the perimeter of the Base. What is the perimeter of the Base?

  13. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(35) + t(24) To find the SA of a prism. Step 2 – Find the perimeter of the Base. What is the perimeter of the Base? 5 + 7 + 5 + 7 = 24

  14. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(35) + t(24) To find the SA of a prism. Step 3 – Find the tallness. How tall is the shape? (What is the distance from Base to Base?)

  15. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(35) + (4)(24) To find the SA of a prism. Step 3 – Find the tallness. How tall is the shape? 4

  16. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(35) + (4)(24) (4) SA = 166ft² To find the SA of a prism. Step 4 – Perform the operations.

  17. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. Do this on your own.

  18. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(3x4) + (2)(3+4+3+4) SA = 52m²

  19. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. Do this on your own.

  20. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. SA = 2(7x4.8) + (6)(7+4.8+7+4.8) SA = 208.8cm²

  21. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms The surface area (SA) of a prism can also be determined by using a net. A net is a deconstructed (flat) version of a three-dimensional shape.

  22. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms To find the surface area (SA) of a prism by using a net the area of each face is added together, like a composite shape.

  23. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Since a rectangular prism has 6 faces, there will be six areas to add.

  24. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism.

  25. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. What is the area of the outlined shapes?

  26. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12+12 What is the area of the outlined shapes? 6 x 2 = 12

  27. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12 + 12 What is the area of the outlined shapes?

  28. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12+12+18+18 What is the area of the outlined shapes? 2 x 9 = 18

  29. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12+12+18+18 What is the area of the outlined shapes?

  30. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12+12+18+18+54+54 What is the area of the outlined shapes? 6 x 9 = 54

  31. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12+12+18+18+54+54 What is the total area?

  32. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 12+12+18+18+54+54 What is the total area? 12+12+18+18+54+54= 168yd²

  33. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. Do this on your own.

  34. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms Find the SA of the rectangular prism. 100+100+150+150+150+150= 800in²

  35. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms A geode is being sent as a gift. It is packed in a box that measures 7 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 16 inches tall. What is the surface area of the box? Do this on your own.

  36. Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms A geode is being sent as a gift. It is packed in a box that measures 7 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 16 inches tall. What is the surface area of the box? B = 7 x 3 = 21, H = 16 SA = 2B + Hp SA = 2(21) + (16)(7+3+7+3) = 362in²
