Being in Year 6……. • Working towards SATs • Big friends, little friends • Bikeability • Visits to Arbrook and Wingham Court • Tour guides • Evaluate – friendships and relationships workshop • Production at end of year Leaver’s assembly • Residential • Secondary school visits and entrance exams • End of year Prom • House captains • Planners • Sporting opportunities (football/netball)

Taking responsibility • Mobile phones – left in office at start of each day and collected at end of day • Role models – good behaviour in class, playground and around school • Looking smart – ties, shirts, footwear, hair, nail varnish and appropriate clothing • Homework and meeting deadlines • Self- organisation e.g PE kit, equipment, planners etc

How you can help in school • In class – particularly Literacy and Numeracy • With swimming – every Tuesday and Friday • Any special areas of expertise e.g DT, Art etc • ECSA meetings and events • Footpath patrol • Lunchtime help in the dining room • Financial assistance – by paying school fund and voluntary contributions promptly • Returning forms etc on time and checking parent mail regularly

  9. Daily Procedures • Punctuality – register is taken at 8:45am, first lesson begins at 8:50am. Children should be in class promptly by 8:45am. • Fruit break needed at playtime due to long morning session (8.45 – 12.30) • a full water bottle each day – drinking water is essential • Healthy lunch box • Children collected promptly at 3:15pm – do not allow children to play on the climbing frame after school. • PE Days – Tuesdays and Thursdays (6B) and Tuesdays and Wednesdays (6SV)

  10. Educational Visits • Science Museum – 25th September • Hindu temple - TBC • Visits to Arbrook (6B) and Wingham court (6SV) Harvest (28th September) and Christmas (TBC) • New Year 6 residential (TBC) • PLEASE could you volunteer your time to help on visits – Year 6 need you!

The Importance of Reading • Daily reading is very important, as it underpins all learning • Encourage your child to read regularly and develop a passion for reading a range of literature and genres • Use planners to record daily reading; question your child about the books they are reading and story line; help with tricky words. • Comprehension tasks will be given on occasions as part of Literacy homework to ensure your child is reading for meaning as well as for pleasure • SATs will include a reading paper – key skills will be assessed in school through guided reading and whole class teaching

  12. Assessment and Feedback • Children assessed through a variety of formal and informal methods • Marking • Verbal feedback • Questioning • Parent Consultations in October, Learning Review Day in February, End of Year report next July

SATs – when and what? • probably week commencing 13th May • 3 maths papers – mental, Paper A (non- calculator), Paper B (calculator) • Reading comprehension paper (externally marked) • Longer writing task, shorter writing task, spelling test (assessed internally) • New for 2013 – Grammar and punctuation test • New for 2013 – Science paper A and B

Behaviour Policy • Silver card – everyone begins here at start of each day • Gold – rewarded for good behaviour • Gold cup – house points for good behaviour • Bronze – warning and reminder • Time out 1 – 5 minutes to reflect on behaviour • Time out 2 – 10 minutes to reflect on behaviour • If no improvement, detention with HT and DHT and parents informed

  15. Home School Agreement • Demonstrates partnership between child/teacher and carers • Please sign appropriate section with your child
